A Pokémon convention with a man eating ravioli sauce out of a jar has admitted it can be much better after being criticised by an upset fan.

Pokérverse, a Pokémon convention in the Philippines, is being compared to the infamous Fyre Festival and the more recent Willy Wonka Experience by fans online.

The expo promised activities such as trainer quests; live music; tournaments; cosplay contests; and meet-ups with the original voice actor of Ash Ketchum, Veronica Taylor, and the singer of the Pokémon theme song, Jason Paige.

However, some fans who showed up were not impressed, with one disgruntled attendee going to great lengths to describe everything wrong with the expo, from few Pokémon-themed activities to ‘The Ravioli Man’.

BintuRita posted a thread on Twitter where they mention late opening times, mis-communicated events, and big open spaces with almost nothing in them.

A Pokémon-themed baking event turned out to be ‘just a promotion for a cake and drink printing service’ and a rest area that consisted of just a few beanbags. This was the only place for cosplayers to adjust their costumes and yet it was constantly filled with photographers.

One room contained four inflatable games, none of which had anything to do with Pokémon, and there weren’t enough admission bands to go around for everyone.

According to BintuRita, there was a ‘smelly man’ eating ravioli sauce out of a jar, who only got kicked out once he started smearing the ravioli on a sponsor’s booth.

The Ravioli Man was later let back in, despite numerous complaints from other attendees, who had had to pay £13 for a one day pass and £260 for a three day VIP pass.

Pokéverse later replied to BintuRita with an apology, saying it was its first event, with little time to prepare, agreeing that ‘a lot of things need to be improved for another season’.

It wasn’t all bad, as BintuRita praised Taylor and Paige’s involvement at the convention, but that was about it.

Low quality fan events have become increasingly common lately and, like the Willy Wonka one in Scotland, it’s not clear that this event had any official approval- which could be a problem for the Pokérverse organisers, as The Pokémon Company can be very litigious.
