What the sizes at Zara REALLY mean and the symbol you should always be looking out for on the label

BRITAIN’S savviest money saving mum has revealed how you can shop smarter in Zara.

The high-street store has become a wardrobe regular for most British women thanks to its stylish designs and affordable prices.

However, there’s a common complaint: the sizing.

It’s no secret that some of Zara’s clothes come up tiny, while others fit like a glove.

But according to ultimate ‘money mum’ Gemma Bird, you can work out how an item from the Spanish fashion store will fit before you’ve even tried it on.

The mum-of-two has revealed the secret code on Zara labels that indicate whether an item fits small, is true to size or fits large.

A square symbol on the right hand side of the inner label means the item is true to size.

A triangle symbol means it’s on the smaller side, while a circle symbol means it’s on the larger side.

Gemma, 42, shared the information on Instagram – but the revelation was met with mixed response.

Some Zara workers attempted to disprove the theory, while others explained it’s a bit more complicated than symbol=size.

It is thought that the symbols indicate different Zara ranges, which in turn has an effect on sizing.

Therefore, while the symbols may not directly indicate different sizes, they represent different Zara lines which may have different sizing strategies to each other.

After doing research on the symbols and speaking to Zara staff, Gemma updated her Instagram post to share the extra information.

“Triangle means it is TRF which is one of the four main departments of the Zara ladies wear collections,” she explained.

“The TRF is more towards the younger customers.

“The circle means ‘woman’, which is more of a classic style collection.

“The square means it is Zara Basic clothes, with this more like a basic line.

“But that doesn’t mean you will not find classic clothes with square, cause you will.”

In short, circle means classic, square means basic and triangle means younger.

The different lines can mean a difference in sizes, owing to the varied sizing strategies across Zara.

There are currently 59 Zara stores in the UK, according to ScrapeHero.

How to look chic on a budget

Fashion stylist Gemma Rose Breger, and beauty journalist Samantha Silver revealed how you can make your outfits elevated without spending hundreds of pounds.

Don’t ever spend on designer denim: River Island ”always has such a great selection with fashion- forward jeans that follow the current trends”. The high street retailer offers a great range of sizes to fit UK 6 – UK 18, and three leg lengths – and prices start from an affordable £25.
There are no rules for jewels: ”Pick up something at a car boot sale, or charity shop, scroll on Vinted & eBay, snap up something from the clothing section in your local supermarket when doing the food shop or check out high street clothing stores.”
Don’t forget the pre-loved sites: With a rising number of second-hand sites, such as Vinted and Depop, there really is no excuse of not buying – or selling – pre-loved garments. Gemma, for instance, has managed to get her hands on chic Chanel sunnies for a mere £17.
