Jessica Gunning has revealed that people have actually screamed in the street after binge-watching Baby Reindeer.

The Netflix series was released in April and became an instant success, following comedian Donny Dunn (Richard Gadd) as he found himself terrorized by stalker Martha (Jessica) – after she wandered into the pub he worked in, and they struck up a bond.

Infatuation very quickly turned into obsession as she bombarded him with emails and followed him around, tarnishing every single part of his life.

The entire world became hooked over the gripping show – which is based on creator Richard’s real-life experience – and it has racked up millions of views, turning the stars into household names.

During a talk at 92NY in New York on Wednesday, the cast unpacked the Baby Reindeer phenomenon and how their lives had changed since it premiered.

When asked about their whirlwind few weeks, Jessica – who publicly came out as gay this week – insisted that she felt exactly the same, except for the odd moment while going about her day.

‘I feel exactly the same and then occasionally, maybe I’ll be in the street…,’ she said. ‘A few weeks ago, I got out of my car and walked around this corner and this lady just screamed.

‘In her defense, she’d just finished episode seven, turned off her TV, opened her front door… It makes sense why she screamed.

‘I feel exactly the same, and then occasionally people scream at me and run away.’

Richard explained that Tom Goodman-Hill, who played his attacker, Darrien, had also had his fair share of awkward moments in public, after taking on the role.

‘Bless Tom Goodman-Hill, he’s the nicest man,’ he told the crowd. ‘People shout at him in the street now.

‘He’s the sweetest dude, I couldn’t have asked for a better guy to do all that stuff with. He has got a heart of gold. We go for coffees now, genuinely.’

Unpacking the reaction from in public, he quipped: ‘People walk in the cafe [and look shocked], “He’s back again! When will he learn?”’

Jessica first stepped into the spotlight with stage roles at the National Theatre, before turning her talents to TV.

She has appeared in Doctor Who, Law & Order: UK, Life of Riley and the Outlaws on BBC – but playing Martha has shot her into superstardom in the last few weeks.

In a recent interview with Metro.co.uk, she reflected on her efforts for the Netflix series, and wanting to the role ‘justice’.

‘In that aspect, I didn’t really let go of her until we finished filming. I couldn’t really put her to bed,’ she told us.

‘When you do a job like this as well, it’s long hours, and you’re there, and you’re in it. With this, emotionally, everyone was really invested… it does dominate your life… it took a while to, kind of, say goodbye in a way.

‘I was really sad when it finished, to say goodbye to her.’

Baby Reindeer is available to stream on Netflix now.
