It seems like Sony has settled on charging only half of its usual £70 price tag for live service games, as pre-orders for Concord go up.

Last week’s full reveal of live service title Concord, during the latest PlayStation State of Play event, didn’t go very well for Sony. The trailer currently has 45,000 dislikes and only 5,100 likes on YouTube, with many complaining of its similarity to Overwatch and the generic character design and gameplay.

It took up nearly half of the State of Play though, so Sony clearly considers it a highly important game for them. Although the good news is that at least it won’t cost much.

Concord has just gone up for pre-order on the PlayStation Store and it’s priced at £34.99 ($39.99 in the US), which is exactly the same as a fellow live service title Helldivers 2. That’s half the £69.99 price tag that Sony charges for most of its single-player first party titles.

There’s also a digital deluxe edition for £49.99/$59.99 which offers 16 additional character skins, the Monarch Pack (which includes Vale’s Monarch Frontliner sniper skin and the Dead Reckoner weapon skin pack), and ‘up to’ 72 hours early access.

Having early access makes the game’s release date August 20, instead of the standard August 23. Although how many people are going to pay for that remains to be seen.

Pre-ordering either edition will grant you access to the game’s beta, which is set to go live in July, and will be Sony’s best chance to change the narrative on the game, if first impressions are good.

It’s worth pointing out that there was little to no hype for Helldivers 2 when it was first announced but it became a massive hit, even if its popularity has sunk considerably in recent weeks.

As Sony is learning, live service games are extremely difficult to get right and even if they’re a success at first many fall off after the first few months.

What’s also true is that the outrage of hardcore fans rarely has any affect on a game’s overall performance, with more casual gamers usually unaware of any controversy.
