Fans of a massive Netflix series have been left scratching their heads after having no clue the final season had been released.

On Thursday the third and final season of fantasy drama Sweet Tooth dropped on the streaming platform.

Based on the comic book series of the same name, it first hit screens in 2021 and was followed by a second season in April last year.

Set in a world where a virus labelled ‘the Sick’ has killed a majority of the world’s human population, a decade on children born after that time are hybrids with animal characteristics.

One of them is 10-year-old Gus (Christian Convery), a naïve part-deer boy, who sets out to find his mother after the death of his dad, teaming up with Tommy Jepperd (Nonso Anozie), a nomad traveller who’s been nicknamed ‘Big Man’ by the young boy.

Last year it was announced the show was getting another season but that it would be its last, with showrunner Jim Mickle speaking about bringing Gus’ story to a close.

He explained that ‘in a lot of ways, it’s exactly the story that I imagined we would tell and in a lot of ways it takes on its own life’.

However, fans of the show have expressed their shock this week that they had no clue the eight new episodes were now available to watch.

‘Since Netflix has simply forgotten to promote it, the third and final season of Sweet Tooth releases tomorrow! Highly recommend the series. One of Netflix’s most underrated shows,’ Darren posted on X.

‘Thanks, like this show and had no idea S3 was coming out,’ user JMB commented.

‘Why did no one tell me about Sweet Tooth ??!!!!’ Jenny added.

However, for those that were aware, they’re already racing through.

‘Just finished Sweet Tooth season 3 and it was amazing. See this is what happens when you let a show complete its run instead of just cancelling it after one season,’ another fan shared.

This time around the show picks up with Gus, Jepperd, Wendy, and Bear setting out for icy Alaska in search of Gus’ mother, Birdie (Amy Seimetz), while she tries tries to uncover the mysterious origins of the deadly Sick.

Mickle said this season was ‘an arctic story with exciting new adventures and what we hope will be a satisfying conclusion to this epic tale’ that would also see Gus witness a new ‘side of the world and humanity’.

He added that this season was also a lot darker as ‘everybody is dealing with some kind of wound or emotional loss, whether that was somebody in their life or a part of themselves’.

Over its run, the series received critical acclaim, earning twenty nominations across its first two seasons at the Children’s and Family Emmy Awards, winning four.

Sweet Tooth is streaming on Netflix.
