Tony Bramwell, who was The Beatles’ tour manager and childhood friend, has died aged 78.

The music mogul – who also discovered Queen – died on June 2 after a short illness.

Sir Paul McCartney took to social media to pay tribute to his lifelong friend, as he wrote: ‘Sad to hear of the passing of Tony Bramwell. He was a good companion to us through the Beatles journey.

‘Always up for a laugh and I’m sorry to see him leave. Thanks Tony. Love ya! From Paul.’

A statement on The Beatles’ official Instagram page added: ‘Tony worked on many NEMS and Apple projects, from music videos to photo shoots, PR and more and will be missed by many friends and colleagues.’

Having met The Beatles in Liverpool before they rose to stardom, Bramwell was childhood friends with Sir Paul, John Lennon and George Harrison, and moved to London with the band.

In the 1960s he was the Hey Jude hitmakers tour manager, and acted as Brian Epstein’s right hand man.

In later life he was a regular figure at International Beatleweek and on tours of historic Beatles locations in Liverpool, including the Strawberry Field John Lennon visitor attraction.

Strawberry Field’s Honorary President, Lennon’s sister Julia Baird said of his death: ‘Tony was the “man in the know” as he was around for the bulk of the Beatles journey. He will be missed at Beatle Week.’
