After the notorious GameStop short squeeze, stock prices are surging once again thanks to the return of Keith Gill, aka Roaring Kitty.
The GameStop short squeeze managed to take over the internet back in 2021, as the company’s stocks soared to an unprecedented degree thanks to a group of investors on the r/wallstreetbets subreddit.
A key figure in this surge was Keith Gill, who is known by the online moniker Roaring Kitty and regularly posts in the subreddit. Gill was portrayed by actor Paul Dano in the 2023 film Dumb Money, which was based on the same events.
Over recent weeks, GameStop shares have been surging once again, after Gill shared several memes relating to the US games retailer on May 17.
As reported by Reuters, this rise has accelerated since Gill announced his YouTube return, on Friday, June 7, for the first time in three years.
According to the outlet, GameStop shares surged nearly 50% on Thursday. This comes after shares jumped by 21% on Monday, after Gill posted on Reddit that he had bought nearly $116 million worth of stock.
Gill made his return to YouTube on Friday with over 600,000 viewers, where he was jokingly covered in plasters and had the GameStop stock price in the background. You can stream the video above.
According to reports, GameStop’s share price ballooned to a record high of $483 per share back in January 2021 during the short squeeze. This led to a crush in hedgefunds that had bet against the gaming retailer.
After drawing criticism for his role in the saga, Gill disappeared, albeit with a wealthy sum. It’s believed his GameStop investment at one point reached $48 million in value.
In the immediate aftermath of his online re-apparence stock prices began to sink, but they’re likely to be extremely volatile while he continues to stoke the market.
