Comedian and actress Rosie Jones has revealed how her mental health has suffered as she reveals she is now in therapy because of online trolls.

Rosie, 33, is a much-loved comedian best known for her work on British comedy panel shows and a recent cameo in Call the Midwife which was applauded and labelled as phenomenal by viewers.

The comedy writer has cerebral palsy and while this hasn’t stopped her from having an incredible career in the entertainment industry, she has revealed that it has triggered a lot of abelist abuse from internet trolls.

When it was announced she was set to appear on the celebrity game show Taskmaster, she was forced to respond to the negative social media backlash that she would be appearing.

In addition, just last month she deleted her X (formerly known as Twitter) account as she was driven off social media after being hounded with ‘hurtful comments. Rosie said at the time: ‘I’ve not felt a lot of joy from this social media platform in a long time, so to come on and see I’m trending, yet again, is exhausting,’

‘I could say comedy is subjective but the truth is the comments are hurtful. I used to love Twitter but I don’t care for this centre of hate. Goodbye.’

In a new interview, the actress has revealed that she is in therapy, following the recent online abuse.

Speaking to Daily Mail, Rosie said of her disability: ‘More recently is it is hard, it is s**t at times.’

‘I wake up some days and I think it would be so much easier if I wasn’t disabled, so don’t look at me and go “She’s happy all the time” because it takes a lot for me to keep on top of my own mental health.’

She added: ‘I even had a guy saying to me “what? You’re in therapy? You seem so happy?” And I’m like, it’s not about whether I’m crying in the street, also you don’t know what’s going on in my head but at the moment it is maintenance making sure that I approach my job and life and relationships as the best possible version of myself and I can do that because I’m in therapy.’

She explained that despite appearing on television for years, she is still continually facing abuse after every on-screen appearance.

‘I suffered in silence for a long time because every time I’m on TV I’ll get so much abuse on social media but I didn’t want anyone to know because that made me feel like I couldn’t cope.’

She added that she feels differently now and is empowered to stand up for herself. ‘But then I thought that’s all bulls*** and shouldn’t have to stand for abuse just for being who I am.’

Rosie added that she now wants to be a force of change against ableism.

‘I didn’t know what ableism was until I was 28 and it’s so damaging to be confronted by that level of discrimination every day and not really have a name for it and even now if you go in the street people know what racism, sexism and homophobia is, but they don’t know what ableism is, so I thought I’m going to change that and try to get that word out there more.’

Taskmaster featuring Rosie Jones as one of the contestants is set to air later this year.
