The trailer for Paddington in Peru has been released, and fans have been left confused as a main cast member has been recast.

The first two Paddington movies starring Ben Whishaw as the beloved marmalade sandwich-loving bear was met with such huge success that there has been incredible excitement about the upcoming third installment of the franchise.

The trailer for the movie was released on Wednesday, June 12 and fans were delighted to catch a glimpse of the new storyline that shows Paddington and the Browns make their way to Peru to visit Aunt Lucy.

However, fans were left confused when they realised that Sally Hawkins, who had played Mrs Brown in the first two films, had been recast.

‘Why did they change the actress of Mrs Brown,’ asked AshynanB on X formerly known as Twitter. Levaskarr added: ‘It’s not the same without Sally Hawkins!!!’

Teresabs15 asked: ‘What happened with Sally Hawkins?’

The trailer showed that joining the cast as Mrs Brown was Emily Mortimer who is best known for her work on Pink Panther, Lars and the Real Girl, The Newsroom, and Match Point.

While this was a shock for some fans, Sally, who played Mrs Brown in the first two films revealed last June that she wouldn’t be reprising her character.

In a statement to Variety, the actress said she was delighted to be handing the role over to Emily.

‘For me, it has felt the right time to hand the reins over to another, and one can’t get much better than the truly wonderful Emily Mortimer, she is extraordinarily special. She will embody the essence of Mary Brown and yet make it utterly her own.

‘However, I am, and will always be in love with Paddington’s world. I already greatly miss my on and off-screen family – the experience of making the first two films has truly been some of the best and most creative times I have had in the world of film.

‘They both gave me so much joy. I will forever hold them so very close to my heart indeed.’

After watching the trailer, fans were also delighted to see that Olivia Colman had joined the cast. The trailer revealed that Olivia is set to play a nun in Peru who tells Paddington that Aunt Lucy has ‘set off on some kind of quest’.

THEFAVOURITE_ said on X: ‘Olivia Colman in #PaddingtonInPeru is all we could’ve asked for.’

Fangirlingmess also commented: ‘OLIVIA COLMAN HAVING A SOUND OF MUSIC MOMENT IN PADDINGTON IN PERU…. I HAVE NEVER BEEN MORE SAT I FEAR’

Additionally, Antonio Banderas has joined the cast as Hunter Cabot, a boat driver who helps the Browns on their travels around Peru and the Amazon.

The first two films were released in 2014 and 2017 respectively so there has been huge anticipation for this third film as fans have had to wait for so many years for its release.

Paddington in Peru is set to be released later this year and fans cannot wait to see the new film. Shutupimogen commented on X: ‘So excited!!!! will have the marmalade sandwiches ready for the 8th of November.’

‘Good luck on your new adventure Paddington! I will be there no matter what,’ added Benvolin27.

Paddington in Peru is set to hit cinemas on November 8.
