Sir Rod Stewart touched on a sore sport for England football legend David Beckham after joking about his Knighthood snub.

Sir Rod, 79 and David, 49 were both invited to meet King Charles earlier this week at the inaugural King’s Foundation charity awards at St James’s Palace.

They were joined by other well-known faces such as Naomi Campbell and Sir Rod’s wife Penny Lancaster.

The event comes after the former England captain was announced as an Ambassador for The King’s Foundation and visited the monarch at Highgrove Gardens to discuss his new appointment (and swap beekeeping tips).

Despite his strengthening link with the crown, the sports star has yet to receive a knighthood, a fact the chart-topping musician was quick to remind David of during a speech at the awards.

‘Penny and I are so honoured to be ambassadors for the King’s trust. I’m also wonderfully honoured to be a knight… David, yours is coming soon,’ the Forever Young hitmaker jested.

Sir Rod was knighted in 2016 in recognition to his services to music and charity.

Speaking to reporters about the comment afterward, he added: ‘Someone has to lighten the atmosphere in the room you know – he’s a good sport.’

David has not addressed the quip, but we’re sure he took it in good spirits.

The 49-year-old sports personality, who waited 13 hours to see the Queen’s coffin after her death, was notably missing from the 2024 New Year Honours List making his last royal recognition an OBE in 2003.

But his tussle with getting a knighthood has been on the public radar for years.

He was one of the celebrities caught up in the Ingenious tax avoidance scheme in 2013 – the same year he retired – which reportedly kept him out of the Honours roll, according to the Sun.

Although this issue is now behind him another roadblock cropped up in 2017 when David’s emails were allegedly leaked in which he complained about being passed over for a Knighthood yet again.

His comments also aimed fire at Welsh singer who was honoured that year, and called the Honours Committee ‘c***s’.

But several years later, could a Knighthood could be just around the corner for the ex-footballer?

The media star, who recently featured in a Netflix documentary Beckham about his life alongside wife Victoria Beckham, also came under fire from fans in recent months after making millions as an ambassador for the Qatar World Cup despite the country’s anti-LGBTQ+ laws.

There was a concerted campaign by Joe Lycett to hold David to account and he was accused of ‘fake morals’ by upset fans.
