Russell Crowe did not hold back when addressing Dakota Johnson’s upset over Madame Web’s poor box office performance.

The Fifty Shades of Grey star, 34, appears as the titular Madame Web in the Marvel film, which was released earlier this year.

The film proved to be a flop, being widely derided by critics and fans alike pulling in just $100million (£78.8million) at the box office against a production budget of around $80m (£63.1m) to $100m, just about breaking even.

Johnson has been vocal about the film’s disappointing performance, but Gladiator star Crowe, 60, had some choice words for the actor about her choice to star in Madame Web.

Crowe is no stranger to the world of superhero films, having starred in the likes of Thor: Love and Thunder, and Superman film Man of Steel.

‘You’re telling me you signed up for a Marvel movie, and some f*****g universe for cartoon characters… and you didn’t get enough pathos?’ Crowe said in an interview with GQ.

‘Not quite sure how I can make this better for you,’ he continued. ‘It’s a gigantic machine, and they make movies at a certain size.’

He added that he was baffled anyone is expecting creative control or guaranteed success by starring in a superhero franchise, explaining that these roles, like any others, ‘are jobs.’

The Pope’s Exorcist star went on: ‘You know: Here’s your role, play the role. If you’re expecting this to be some kind of life-changing event, I just think you’re here for the wrong reasons.’

The much-memed film stars Johnson as Cassandra Webb – a clairvoyant paramedic whose mum was in the Amazon researching spiders right before she died.

Even Dakota started slating the film while do the promotional tour, with sly remarks about how rubbish it really was.

‘Unfortunately, I’m not surprised that this has gone down the way it has,’ she said during an appearance on Saturday Night Live.

She also claimed she had not watched her own film, which is now available to stream on Netflix.
