Ariana Grande has set to the record straight after a viral video showed her voice jumping from low to high within seconds.

The God Is a Woman hitmaker appeared on Penn Badgley’s Podcrushed podcast last week to reflect on the ‘heartbreak, anxiety and self-discovery of being a teenager’.

The clip pulled from the episode was shared by TikTok user @scatsplat and has been viewed almost six million times and liked over 800,000 times.

In the lead-up to the 13-second video, the Grammy-winning artist is talking about the process behind creating her latest studio album Eternal Sunshine.

She starts: ‘I went to the studio the day after the Met and I stayed for like 10 days and I was literally living there and I felt like I woke up today and I felt like Austin Powers being unfrozen.’

Ariana then laughs along with Penn and his co-hosts, Nava Kavelin and Sophie Ansari.

As the clip itself begins, she says in a deeper, huskier voice: ‘That’s the only thing I thought of. That’s how I felt. I was like “what happened?”‘ before suddenly switching.

‘But yeah I, I would like to do a deluxe [album] at some point,’ she adds as her voice dramatically raises in pitch.

As fans rushed to find an explanation for the bizarre change the music artist cleared up all the speculation.

The former Nickelodeon star commented: ‘Habit (speaking like this for two years) and also vocal health :).

‘I intentionally change my vocal placement (high / low) often depending on how much singing i’m doing [adding an emoji with tears streaming down its face],

‘I’ve always done this BYE.’

The 30-year-old music artist is set to star in the cinematic adaptation of Wicked the Musical as Glinda the Good opposite Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba.

Glinda has a well-known high-pitched squeak, making fans wonder if the vocal change is linked to her new character. Meanwhile, others were simply shocked at the sudden change, regardless of the explanation.

‘I feel her Glinda voice is easier on her vocals than her normal voice but Glinda is also a big part of her,’ @gracie shared.

‘I know she can’t wait for wicked to drop so she can stop talking like glinda she sick of doing that voice,’ @grahabuck added.

‘I don’t even know what her real voice sounds like anymore,’ @catsinhats added.

‘This is the first time I realised how much her voice changes,’ @ceciliaaa633 added.

But fans were also defending her.

‘I seen a couple people call it weird. yall acting like y’all’s voices don’t change in certain spaces and settings. her interview voice is no different, especially cause singers use to to preserve their vocals. don’t bring no dumb s**t over here,’ @dylanisunique shared.

Some have speculated she is avoiding vocal fry. As explained by John Hopkins Medicine, this is the ‘the lowest register (tone) of your voice characterized by its deep, creaky, breathy sound.’

Although some believe it can affect vocal chord health, John Hopkins added that it is ‘not physically harmful to the health of your voice’.

This is not the first time people have pointed out Ariana’s oscillating voice. In March the star presented the best original song award at the Oscars ceremony with an unusually high-pitched delivery.

She addressed her vocal changes after appearing on the Zach Sang podcast earlier this year.

In preparation for the Wicked role, the yes, and? singer said: ‘I tried to use that to take lessons every single day while I was doing The Voice and get ready for these auditions.

‘I trained every day with Nancy [Banks] and with Eric [Vetro] to transform my voice, even, like, my singing voice, everything about me, I had to deconstruct to prove to them I could handle taking on this other person.’
