FromSoftware’s expansion for Elden Ring has become the most celebrated DLC ever following early reviews, beating The Witcher 3 and GTA 4.

While it was unlikely any DLC for Elden Ring would prove to be disappointing, based on FromSoftware’s pedigree, the studio has still managed to surpass itself in terms of critical acclaim.

The expansion, titled Shadow Of The Erdtree, features a whole new map filled with new bosses, weapons, legacy dungeons, and skills to toy around with. It’s also driven by a new narrative centred around the character of Miquella.

After reviews released on Tuesday, prior to the launch on Friday, June 21, Shadow Of The Erdtree has become the highest-rated DLC on Metacritic.

At the time of writing, the PlayStation 5 version of the expansion holds a score of 95 on the review aggregate site. This is higher than all of FromSoftware’s previous expansions, with the closest being Dark Souls DLC Artorias Of The Abyss with 89 based on seven scores.

The score for Shadow Of The Erdtree is perhaps more impressive considering it’s based on 56 reviews in total. The figures for Xbox and PC are lower, at 94 and 92, but that’s based on 8 and 45 reviews, respectively.

Other well-reviewed DLC includes The Witcher 3’s Blood & Wine with 92, while Destiny 2: The Final Shape also enjoys the same score. You can check out a list of the some of the highest-rated DLC below.

FromSoftware boss Hidetaka Miyazaki has been cagey about whether there would be another expansion or a sequel for Elden Ring, but he stated there ‘could well be something in the future’ – which could mean just about anything.

If the studio isn’t motivated to make a sequel by the critical acclaim, they might be driven by Elden Ring’s huge sales – with the title having shipped over 25 million units worldwide so far.
