Healers are planning to ignore their job when Final Fantasy 14’s upcoming expansion launches, because of ‘negligence towards the role’.

Final Fantasy 14 is still going strong 14 years after its release, when it was so popular it sold out of digital copies. The massively multiplayer online game is getting its fifth major expansion on July 2, called Dawntrail, which comes with a new story, updates to the battle system, and new dungeons.

As such, publisher Square Enix is pumping out updates ahead of the expansion, and giving content creators the chance to play selected parts of the game early.

One streamer, who was invited to try the expansion out early, went on to beat the first dungeon without a healer in his party. This now has healers worried that their role in the game is becoming redundant, and so they’ve decided to go on strike.

In an extensive post on Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 14 forum page, one healer has had enough and posted a manifesto, assembling an army of fellow healers to the cause.

‘I would like to make this the official thread for those in support of a healer strike, as a collective voice to the dev [developer] team, to express the dissatisfaction with the continued direction the game has gone concerning healer gameplay.’

The poster goes on to say that they deem recent developments as ‘negligence towards the role, as well as the players who main it.’

The strike means that all healers that are aware of it will stop participating in grouped events, leaving other fans of the role-player without their help, starting from when Dawntrail launches on July 2.

The aim of the strike is to ‘garner support for necessary changes and adjustments to be made in order to once again validate its place in content that requires grouping,’ the post says.

The manifesto specifically criticises the decision to give healing abilities to other non-healer roles, that the numerous healer roles are becoming too similar, and that the difficulty of the game is generally too low to make healers important to others.

The post has sparked a huge discussion within the Final Fantasy 14 community, with thousands of comments, many in support of the protest.

There’s also a Discord server for all protestors, as well as a hashtag spreading on social media – #FFXIVHEALERSTRIKE – but whether or not fans will have the discipline to not play their preferred job type when the expansion comes out remains to be seen.
