Fashion fans go wild as divisive 90s trousers return to M&S in time for summer – & shoppers say they’re super flattering
THEY were popular in the 90s, but now it seems that capri pants are back on trend.
Sitting at waist height, hugging the thigh and cropping just below the knee – the divisive trouser that was once worn with kitten heels and ballet flats – has now returned to shelves.

Also known as peddle pushers, the cropped, slim fitting trousers are back on our fashion radar – and although many hated them in the early 2000s, it seems that fashion fans are beaming.
And if you fancy nabbing a pair on a budget, look no further than M&S.
The M&S Ireland store took to their official TikTok account to give shoppers a close-up look at the new trousers.
In a clip which was posted with the caption ‘Looking to style our capri pants? We’ve got you covered’, we saw content creator Molly McKeever model the new black trousers, leaving many totally stunned.
The fashion fan styled the incredibly versatile Cotton Blend Slim Fit Cropped Trousers, which are just £25, in two ways.
She said: “So, as you all know, the Capri style pants are back on trend in 2024, so I wanted to style them two ways.
“I’m going first with a very comfortable, casual daytime look by pairing it with a cardigan, a headband and some ballet flats.
“I would wear this to brunch, or because the pants are quite formal, I feel you could wear this to the office as well.
“The second look I’m going for is a little bit more night time chic, so I paired it with this linen waistcoat, ballet flats again, and I just feel this look is a little bit more elevated and perfect for a date night this summer.”
Whilst Molly wore the trousers in black, they are available in six other colours – soft white, buff, sand, pink, navy and amethyst.
There are four different leg lengths to choose from – extra short, short/petite, regular and long.
Sizes range from a 6 to a 24, making these trousers perfect for a variety of different body shapes.
The trousers are made with a ouch of stretch for a comfortable feel.
They have a secure hook bar and zip fastening at the flattering high waist, and dart detailing creates a neat shape at the front, whilst side pockets add a practical finish.
Hottest trends for Spring/Summer 2024
Fabulous’ Fashion Editor, Clemmie Fieldsend has shared the biggest trends on the high street and runway this Spring/Summer.
SHORTS
I know, shorts for summer. Groundbreaking. But you’ll be seeing them everywhere this year, from micro hotpants to long, Bermuda styles in denim to tailoring and everything in between they’re a must have for every occasion.
WHITE
White usually goes hand-in-hand with your summer holidays but whether you’re in the UK or abroad you’ll be seeing an abundance of head-to-toe white looks.
The high street is already a, erm, white wash with the trend that includes shoes and accessories.
HIGH SHINE
Beit metallics or sequins, for 2024 sparkle isn’t just for Christmas.Expect to see shimmering looks at festivals, weddings or even a barbeque in your neighbours back garden teamed with block brights or simple whites.
BAGGY BOTTOMS
Wide leg and loose jeans have gripped our wardrobes from autumn to winter, but as we move into warmer months expect baggy trousers. From crisp cotton to lightweight linen, fluid trews should have a firm place in your wardrobe.
PUMPS
Ballet pumps and Mary Jane’s have been clawing their way back into our good books for a while now, but for summer they’re looking less ballerina and more beach ready.
Woven styles and mesh textures are hot off the catwalk and onto the high street, think the 2024 jelly shoe.
GO GIRLY
All things romantic and girly are in for spring with sheer fabrics, pastel shades of blue, yellow and pink gripping the runway. Embellished with bows, lace or flowers, most looks should have an element of being hyper ‘girly’.
The social media clip, which was posted under the username @marksandspencerirl, has clearly left many open-mouthed, as it has quickly amassed 110,200 views.
And not only were social media users impressed with the capri pants, but many M&S shoppers flocked to the website to share their reviews of the new trousers too.

Another added: “I have bought many similar pairs for the past few years in various colours.
“This year I wanted another white pair (because they go with everything) plus this year the amethyst pair (a colour you had not done before).
Why Everyone Is Loving M&S
Deputy Fashion Editor Abby McHale revealed to Fabulous why M&S is the shop of the moment. She explained:
“M&S has really pulled it out of the bag this season, there is so much good product to be excited about.
“A brand once known for its ‘frumpy fashion’ that notion is long gone with it now being one of the leading high street stores for womenswear.
“Its handbag range in particular is super strong with them selling 170% vs plan, with lots more designer dupes for just a fraction of the price.
“The brand is now also the #1 for style perceptions, compared to the #3 spot it had last year, this comes from a really strong design team focused on modernising the brand, not only taking into consideration how the pieces look, but how easy they are to wear also.
“Price is also a big factor with you being able to get many good quality pieces all for under £30.
“After having a sneak peak of the upcoming collection there are so many more amazing pieces that are dropping over the next few months to keep your eyes on.
“Think leopard print dresses, colourful co-ords, embroidered boho jackets, plus lots of swimwear and amazing accessories, as well as great wardrobe staples that will last year on year.”
“I now have eight/nine pairs in all. I love them. They fit so well and the material is lovely and does not crease.”
A third commented: “Lovely style, flattering, comfortable, good length.”
Meanwhile, someone else beamed: “Smart and comfortable – these are a wardrobe staple for me.”
