MaXXXine has received rave first reactions as the third and final film in Ti West’s X trilogy comes to cinemas.
The A24 film sees Mia Goth return to the role of Maxine Minx after the adult film star survived the event of the first film, 2022’s X.
After escaping with her life, Maxine gets her big break in Hollywood, but when a mysterious serial killer starts stalking the streets of Los Angeles, her sinister past could be uncovered.
Infinity Pool star Goth is not the only huge star among the cast, as she is joined by Halsey, Lily Collins, Elizabeth Debicki, Sophie Thatcher, and Kevin Bacon.
Ahead of its UK cinema release on July 2, early screenings have seen the film highly praised, with MaXXXine scoring a strong 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Fresh Fiction described the film as ‘Gutsy, gritty and grisly’, adding: ‘West and his leading lady go for the gusto and the result is a total blast.’

Empire’s review said: ‘Mia Goth’s Maxine is what you’d get if the Robert De Niro and Jodie Foster of Taxi Driver were fused in the telepod from The Fly.’
Daily Dead added: ‘Maxxxine strikes its poses, cracks some skulls, and gets unexpectedly goofy, yet its pastiche sometimes feels skin-deep. West tries to have it all … only to undersell competing features due to overstuffed ambitions.’
Meanwhile, Inverse wrote: ‘West’s final entry into the modern horror canon seamlessly comes to a confident and glorious close, a star immortalized in her bloody triumph of the self.’
West’s trilogy began with X, which saw a group of adult film stars travel to a remote Texas farm owned by elderly couple Pearl and Howard to shoot their next picture.
However, when Pearl catches the group in the act of filming the x-rated content, the youngsters soon find themselves fighting for their lives.
Goth appeared as both Maxine and Pearl in the film and was praised for her masterful dual acting roles in which she appeared unrecognisable as the wisened farm owner.

The actor returned to her role as Pearl in the 2023 sequel named after her. Pearl takes us back to the Texas farm where we see the titular character’s upbringing under her strict, conservative mother and disabled father.
She has dreams of becoming a star on the Hollywood stage – and with a big audition coming up, her dreams appear to be within her grasp – but Pearl’s tenuous grip on reality and bloodthirsty desires threaten it all.
Speaking to Variety, Goth explained how the role of Pearl ‘changed her’ as she described it as her ‘most difficult’ performance yet.
‘I believe Pearl has fundamentally changed me as a performer. It’s given me a whole new sense of self and a whole new level of confidence in terms of what I think I am able to do,’ she continued.
‘It was a lot, but also just incredibly rewarding and such a gift to play. I really feel as though it fundamentally changed me in many ways for the better.’
MaXXXine is released on July 2.
