An actress who appeared in one of the most beloved shows of the 90s has barely aged two decades after playing one of the main character’s mums.

Airing from 1998 until 2003, teen drama Dawson’s Creek centred on the lives of a close-knit group of friends in the fictional town of Capeside, Massachusetts, following them from high school into college.

It ran for six seasons and starred James Van Der Beek as Dawson Leery; Katie Holmes as his best friend and love interest, Joey Potter; Joshua Jackson as their fellow friend Pacey Witter; and Michelle Williams as Jen Lindley, who moves from New York City to the small town.

Also appearing was Mary-Margaret Humes, who featured in 93 of the 128 episodes.

She played Dawson’s mum Gail Leery, who worked as an anchor at the Capeside news station before leaving journalism to start the restaurant Leery’s Fresh Fish.

The American actress started her career in the public eye as a beauty pageant titleholder, winning the Miss Florida USA pageant and being named the third runner up in the 1975 Miss USA.

She then went on to work in television, making her screen debut as the Vestal Virgin Miriam in the Mel Brooks’s comedy film History of the World, Part I.

She then guest-starred in a number of shows in the 1980s, including The Dukes of Hazzard, The Love Boat, The A-Team, The Fall Guy, Knight Rider, and T.J. Hooker.

She starred in the 1992 television movie Perry Mason: The Case of the Reckless Romeo, and later made appearances in Matlock, Diagnosis: Murder, In the Heat of the Night and Murphy Brown.

But it was her role on Dawson’s Creek that became her most notable role.

After the series wrapped up, Mary- Margaret made appearances on Grey’s Anatomy, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and Criminal Minds, as well as several Hallmark Channel television movies.

The now 70-year-old has an active social media presence, sharing life updates with her 72,000 Instagram followers.

In recent years the ageless actress has also posted birthday tributes to her former co-stars including James and Katie.

Earlier this year her former on-screen son also revealed Mary-Margaret made and sent him cookies every year.

In March he posted a video on Instagram and shared that in the years since his own mother had died his ‘TV mum’ had baked him cookies on his birthday.

‘It doesn’t matter that I’m now older than she was when we first worked together, or that I’ve moved to Texas. She bakes them, and finds me, and does it from the bottom of her heart – and it always warms mine,’ he explained.

Many fans thought their ongoing connection was incredibly touching, with one writing: ‘So nice to see you still have a special bond.’

Dawson’s Creek is streaming on ITVX.
