That’s a long ban (Reddit)

The longest ban ever for a Fortnite player works out at just shy of 3 million days, but he’s not saying what he did to deserve it.

Although cheating is a hot issue with games like Call Of Duty and Counter-Strike 2 there are also hundreds of people being banned on Fortnite all the time, not just for cheating but various other infractions – some of which lead to a ban for only a few days.

However, one hapless player has just broken the record for the longest ban ever, which will last for 2,912,958 days. That’s the equivalent of just over 7,980 years and means he can’t play again until the year 10,026 in the 101st century.

Proof of the ban was posted on Reddit but there’s no indication of what the player was banned for. So while it’s probably a mistake of some sort, maybe he keyed the head of Epic Games’ car… or was just really unpleasant online.

The fact that it’s such a peculiar number means it’s almost certainly a glitch but it’s specifically a social ban, rather than one for cheating.

Social bans are usually given for toxic behaviour online and generally only last for a week or so, or sometimes involve simply having voice and text chat turned off for a while.

So unless the player said something truly shocking, it’s unlikely they deserve nearly 8,000 years of exile from Fortnite.

It’s hard to imagine what the world will look like in 8,000 years (or perhaps it’s worryingly easy, given the way things are going) but if any game is still going to be running after all that time it’ll probably be Fortnite.

Naturally, other players have been trying to work out what’s going on, but there’s nothing to really go on beyond the initial image shared on Reddit.

‘Did you declare war to a country?’ asks the top-rated comment from AsterBoiii.

Meanwhile, panda_pop_paladin helpfully calculates that Fortnite will be on Chapter 680 Season 23 by that point (he didn’t really calculate it, he’s just guessing).

A number of people have raised the question of whether he can gift his account to someone else when he dies, so that a distant relative can finally play the game under his name, in the far future.

Given how much people can end up spending on live service games, the idea of bequeathing online accounts has become a genuine issue in recent years, although in this case it’s probably just better to make a new one.

What did he do? (Epic Games)
