‘It’s so bad.’
The director’s cuts of the first installments of the Rebel Moon saga landed on Netflix with an awkward fizzle.
Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire, the first part of Zack Snyder’s passion project, has a run time of 2 hours, 16 minutes, and was released in cinemas at the end of 2023, before it was dropped on the streaming platform on December 22.
The follow-up, Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver premiered in April with a run time of 2 hours, 3 minutes, and was watched more than 21million times in the first few days after it released.
Although viewers clearly pressed play in their droves when the original movies came out, the same cannot be said for Zack’s versions of both offerings when they appeared on Netflix on August 2.
According to Netflix figures for the week of July 29 to August 4, the director’s cut of Part One (aka Chalice of Blood) – run time 3 hours, 24 minutes – and Part Two (aka Curse of Forgiveness) – run time 2 hours 53 minutes – did not make the top 10.
Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie was in the top spot and was viewed more than 12million times, with 18.5million hours watched.

Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie, Trolls Band Together, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back and The Bad Guys were also in the list while the Marksman rounded out the top 10 with around 3.6M views.
This means that, despite the fanfare that both cuts received, they were both viewed less than 3.6million times each, and earned less than 6.4million hours watched.
Many were also left unimpressed with Zack’s extended versions, and flocked to Reddit to unpack the extra footage.
TheRealProtozoid wrote: ‘I’m about an hour into it. It’s so bad. It’s much, much longer. The entire first 10-15 minutes is new. Every scene goes on forever. Every other scene is someone explaining backstory.’

Cescquintero penned: ‘First one gives more details about plot but it’s mostly the same thing as the first release. The second movie was a bit more interesting, had more pace, more exposition to understand the world.
‘I say they’re watchable if you like ZS work but I dislike the whole idea of the way they decided to release these movies. Unnecessary.’
Lance777 fumed: ‘Nope.. Nope.. Nope.. Not watching another znyder cut. He can try to get it right the first time like every other director.
As Krakengreyjoy suggested: ‘I won’t be watching a longer version of a terrible movie.’

Addressing the criticism that his films are routinely met with, in a chat with Metro.co.uk, he remained resolute on his career.
‘We were talking about even just [with] Rebel Moon – Part One,’ he told us. ‘I’m like, it’s not that controversial of a movie.
‘A lot of people have this crazy reaction to it. And I’m just like, “I don’t get it! I don’t get that reaction.” So yeah, I just think that in the zeitgeist, I’ve just found this weirdo spot, you know, and it is what it is. I’m not mad about it, but it just is what it is.’
Both versions of Rebel Moon: Part One and Part Two are available to stream on Netflix now.
