Toy Story 5 will see everyone’s favourite characters ‘take on tech’ in their hardest job yet, Pixar’s chief creative officer has revealed.
Many fans thought that the animation studio had wrapped up the longstanding and popular franchise first started in 1995 with 2019’s Toy Story 4.
However, in January 2023, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that Pixar was revisiting the world of its first hit, with Tim Allen later confirmed to be back onboard voicing Buzz Lightyear.
Although no other formal casting news has been shared, it’s assumed Tom Hanks will also return to voice cowboy Woody as a first-look picture from the film at Disney fan event D23 attended by Metro.co.uk showed a whole line of our favourite toys – such as Rex, Bullseye and newer character, Forky.

Toy Story is what ‘put Pixar on the map 30 years ago’ recalled Picar CCO Pete Docter, adding that the studio was excited for what will happen next.
‘In all of the Toy Story films, above anything else, the job of the toy is for them to be there for their kids,’ Stanton then explained.
‘And in Toy Story 5, the toys’ jobs get exponentially harder when our toy crew goes head-to-head with what kids are obsessed with today – electronics!’
The director pointed out the fierce competition traditional toys face nowadays with ‘phones, tablets and technology everywhere’.

‘So this time around, it’s toy meets tech,’ he added of the film, which is scheduled to release in summer 2026.
The 58-year-old also teased part of the storyline involving Allen’s space ranger toy, Buzz.
‘There’s a little issue with more than 50 rogue commentative Buzz Lightyear action figures stuck in toy mode that will bring considerable problems for everyone,’ Stanton explained.
This seems to hark back to the satisfying high jinx that ensued when Buzz got stuck in Spanish mode in Toy Story 3 in 2010, showing off a hitherto unseen flamboyant side to the character.

Brad Bird is returning to direct after the success of the first two Incredibles movies, released in 2004 and 2018, which followed the adventures of a family gifted with different superpowers.
Pixar also has alien abduction movie Elio for release next year, with Zoe Saldaña announced to be joining the cast, as well as a newly announced original movie.
In Hoppers – due in 2026 – animal-loving Mabel uses ground-breaking new technology to hop into a lifelike robotic model of a beaver so she can communicate with animals.
