Will Young has explained how he was once left in a mortifying situation discovering he was the butt of a comedian’s jokes.

Since winning the inaugural series of the ITV talent contest Pop Idol in 2002, Will has gone on to release nine albums and act in film, on stage and in television, as well as appear on Strictly Come Dancing and The Masked Singer.

Although Will has picked up plenty of fans over the years, he’s now recalled a situation where a comedian wasn’t too kind to him.

Appearing on Sunday Brunch this week, hosts Tim Lovejoy and Simon Rimmer were chatting to their guests about the Edinburgh Fringe when they asked the performer if he’d ever attended.

After confirming he had, Will then explained a truly awkward moment he found himself in.

‘I used to love going to the festival, but I did go to a show years ago and it was a comedian and the bulk of her show was about me,’ he said.

As the hosts and his fellow guests looked on nervously, Will continued.

‘It was not very nice about me, and I was in the front row and she said “I don’t know what to do because my show is taking the pi** out of Will Young and he is sitting in the front row”.’

However, before any more details of the story could be shared, the hosts had to issue an apology for Will dropping a swear word on live TV.

Jumping in, Tim issued an apology to viewers of the morning Channel 4 show, saying: ‘I must apologise for using that word.’

Shocked by the correction, Will was taken aback by what he’d done, declaring: ‘Oh is that a bad word? I am so sorry.’

He then joked that he should know better as it was his sixth time appearing on the show.

Then speaking more about the uncomfortable comedy show, Will revealed more details.

‘Well did she do the material or not?’ Tim asked, to which Will replied she didn’t.

‘She kind of stopped the show. I’m not joking. She did about 20 minutes and then that was it. It was so bizarre, very awkward,’ he said.

Despite the apology being issued for Will’s language, viewers didn’t seem to mind too much.

‘I missed what he said. I guess it was sweary?’ one person posted on X.

Sunday Brunch airs weekly at 9am on Channel 4.
