Scarface actor Angel Salazar has died aged 68.

The big screen star, who famously played Chi Chi alongside Al Pacino’s Tony Montana in the 1983 gangster classic, was staying with a friend in Brooklyn, New York, when he tragically ‘passed away in his sleep’.

Salazar’s representative, Ann Wingsong, confirmed to TMZ that he died on Sunday morning, and was discovered by his pal who went to check on him in the bedroom.

A cause of death is not known at the time of writing.

As well as Scarface, he also had movie roles in 1980’s Where the Buffalo Roam, 1982’s A Stranger is Watching, 1984’s The Wild Life, 1985’s Sylvester, 1988’s Punchline and 1993’s Carlito’s Way.

More recently, he was in 2022’s The Black Caesar and last year’s The Gilbert Diaries: The Movie.

As well as acting, Salazar was a hit comedian known for the catchphrase ‘Sheck it out’.

The funnyman appeared on NBC series Last Comic Standing, and his last comedic performance was at Reno’s Silver Legacy resort and casino between August 1 and 4.

Salazar was active on social media and had only recently congratulated gymnast Simone Biles, 27, for her triumph at the Paris Olympics.

He wrote on Instagram: ‘You Did It Simone, You Come Back BIGGER than Ever…America Is Proud Of You…For You Made America Look Good.’

Fans and fellow performers have flooded social media with tributes to the late start, with recording artist and bandleader Tito Puente describing him as an ‘amazing actor and good friend’.

‘Rest in peace Angel Salazar “chichi” you were an amazing actor and good friend hermano,’ he wrote. ‘From scarface to carlito’s way your characters and comedy will be forever missed.’

Actress Kadrolsha Ona Carole added: ‘Got home from filming to find out my dear close friend Angel Salazar passed away. Angel and I worked together for years.

‘I will miss his silly antics and cheerful laughter. Super sad. Love you my friend. May you rest in peace.’

Comedian Auggie Smith said: ‘R.I.P. Angel Salazar. I watched him absolutely murder one night at The Icehouse. He crushed for 90 straight minutes right after I had ate it. I would’ve loved to blame my set on the crowd but Angel made that impossible.’

And another comedian, Adam Hunter, simply posted: ‘RIP to my friend Angel Salazar. Worked together a few months ago. Comedy legend.’
