Love Actually actor Chiwetel Ejiofor has weighed in on the controversial love triangle between his character and those played by Keira Knightley and Andrew Lincoln in the movie.
And unsurprisingly – he admits he may be ‘biased’ – he does have an issue with how everything went down, proclaiming Lincoln’s Mark as a ‘sh***y’ best friend to his Peter.
Famously, and rather controversially, in the film, Mark harbours unrequited feelings for Knightley’s Juliet, which is unfortunate as she’s marrying his best mate, Peter.
Initially, it appears as though Mark hates her, with Juliet trying to offer an olive branch which he shuns in one of the film’s intertwining storylines of different types of love.
In an iconic but rather creepy sequence, he later turns up at their house to confess his love to Juliet via the use of ‘humorous’ placards, to the soundtrack of carol singers so Peter won’t know what’s going on.
When asked about his thoughts on Mark being a terrible best friend, Ejiofor confessed that he thought so ‘undoubtedly’.
‘I may be biased, I may not be the jury, but I’ve said it to his face!’ the actor told ComicBook.com, adding that he felt ‘if there was a conversation between the two of them afterwards, it could become heated’.
The Bridget Jones 4 star and Oscar nominee, 47, also observed that, over two decades after the hugely popular festive rom-com’s release, there was a ‘season’ that comes around when fans watch it, between December and Valentine’s Day.
However, he shared that he felt other people’s reactions to Mark’s behaviour ‘ebbs and flows’.
‘I’ve noticed over the 20 years or so since the film came out, that sometimes people find it romantic – the gesture, the cards, all of that stuff – and other times, people just think, “What is he doing? He should have been arrested.”’
Ejiofor is soon to appear in new film Rob Peace, which he co-wrote and directed.
