Sony Santa Monica Studio is continuing to hire new developers and it seems they’re working on both God Of War and their new sci-fi game.
Perhaps it doesn’t seem much of a surprise to know that Santa Monica Studio is making a new God Of War game, considering the overwhelming success of the last two entries, but every rumour so far has been pointing at their next game being a new sci-fi franchise.
However, a new job listing seems to make it plain that they’re also working on a new God Of War, with the requirements being for, ‘candidates who are fluent with the combat design choices, systems, mechanics, and enemies in God Of War (2018) and God Of War Ragnarök (2022).’
You don’t get that specific unless you’re making a sequel and yet as far as any public information shows, Santa Monica Studio isn’t quite big enough to be working on two AAA games at once – so it’s unclear what their next game is going to be.
The specific role is for Senior Combat Designer (Hero) and also requires someone that can, ‘speak to and discuss, in depth, hero combat systems, mechanics, and enemies in one or more 3rd person melee action RPGs.’
Most of the wording for the job is identical to a similar role advertised in April, so either they never filled it or they need more people with the same skills. Either way they don’t seem to care that it gives away what they’re working on, which is strangely common for job ads in the games industry.
Similar ads at Sucker Punch are the only real evidence that they’re currently working on Ghost Of Tsushima 2, with the only question being whether the games are full sequels or smaller spin-offs akin to Spider-Man: Miles Morales from Insomniac.
That is what has been rumoured before for God Of War, with fan theories that it could have you playing as Atreus or otherwise acting as a set-up for the location and mythology for next series of games.
That would also explain how Santa Monica Studio could be working on two high-profile projects at once, although it could also simply be that full production on the new God Of War hasn’t started yet (or that the studio is bigger than currently realised).
What’s far more difficult to predict is when Sony might announce this or any other new first party game, although there are currently faint rumours of a State of Play in September.
Officially though, nothing is known about Santa Monica Studio’s current plans, other than that the PC version of God Of War Ragnarök (developed by Jetpack Interactive) is due to be released on September 19.
It’s unlikely that Sony would say anything about a new God Of War before that, or indeed at any time this year.
