New Nintendo Direct confirmed for August and it’s a special one…-GameCentral-Entertainment – Metro
Rumours of a Nintendo Direct this month have been proven correct but it’s not going to be about the Switch 2 or any new video games.
The rumour was technically correct but that still doesn’t mean a Switch 2 reveal (Nintendo)
Rumours about a Nintendo Direct this month have proven correct but it’s not about the Switch 2 or even new video games at all.
The problem with rumours is that even when they’re true they often only reveal half the story. Earlier this month, leaker PH Brazil predicted there’d be a new Nintendo Direct this month and once again he’s been proven right.
According to him, Nintendo’s schedule for Direct events has been moved forward and the obvious assumption is that means they’re getting ready to officially unveil the Switch 2 console.
Unfortunately, that’s not the case though. Nintendo has confirmed there will be a new Direct this month but instead of a reveal for their new console it will instead be a virtual tour of their new museum in Japan.
We’re sure that will all be very interesting but clearly it’s not what anyone was hoping for at this moment. The Direct will take place at 8am on Tuesday, August 20, which may seem strangely early but that’s 4pm in Japan, which is clearly intended to be the primary audience for the Direct.
That’s also the day before Gamescom, which seems slightly odd timing as Nintendo is not involved with the event or Gamescom Open Night Live later that same evening.
The museum was first announced back in 2021 and is situated on the ground of one of its former playing card factories, from back before video games even existed.
As a company, Nintendo is over 134 years old, so a museum is more than justified, with the new building promising to display ‘Nintendo’s historical products’ and host various temporary exhibits and ‘experiences’.
Up until now there’s been very little other information about the museum, including the opening date – which was originally supposed to be sometime before this April.
The announcement of the Direct suggests that the museum will now open in the autumn, but the Direct itself will last just 10 minutes or so.
Some fans are certain to accuse Nintendo of trolling, given what everyone was hoping they’d talk about, but Nintendo works according to its own logic and rarely does what anyone else expects.
It’s hard to say whether this makes a Switch 2 reveal more or less likely this year, but Brazil also suggested that there would be second Nintendo online event this month, in the form of another Indie World.
Clearly that won’t talk about the Switch 2 either, but if Nintendo is going to announce it this year it’s more likely to happen later this autumn.
The museum is called Nintendo Gallery (Nintendo)
