A semiconductor company claims that new models of the Switch, PS5, and Xbox are all due to start to go into production this September.
There’s been a lot of Switch 2 rumours in the last few weeks, from how much it might cost to when it might be released. That’s not surprising as, even without any insider info, you’d expect it to be getting close to the point where it’s being manufactured in secret, ahead of its final release.
Since Nintendo has said the new console, nicknamed Switch 2 by fans, will be announced by at least next April it’s fair to assume that it might already have entered production, but apparently not quite. Instead, that’s seemingly due to start in the next quarter, potentially as early as September.
According to the CEO of Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer Weltrend Semiconductor their video game console business will recover in the third quarter (i.e. September through November) thanks to ‘the introduction and shipment of new models of PlayStation 5, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch.’
Exactly what he means by ‘shipment’ is not entirely clear, especially as it’s likely to be different for each console, but it likely refers to sending the components they provide to Nintendo or a third party company, so that they can then assemble the completed console.
For example, according to website MoneyDJ, Weltrend supplies parts to do with the power supply and USB sockets in the current Nintendo Switch.
Although he’s sensible enough not to be any more explicit it’s obvious what the new models of console are: the PS5 Pro, the all-digital Xbox Series X, and the Nintendo Switch 2.
The Xbox Series X is only a minor refresh, and no more or less powerful than the current model, but the technical specifications of the PS5 Pro have been leaking for months now. Although there’s still been no hint from Sony as to its existence.
Nintendo has never said anything substantial about the Switch 2, just that it will be announced by at least next spring, along with fairly clear hints that it will be backwards compatible.
Despite numerous theories and leaks there’s still no real clue as to when the console will be announced or released. An announcement this year is still possible, despite the disappointment of this week’s Nintendo Direct, but it’s equally likely it will be early 2025.
The release date is even harder to guess at and while sources claim that May is now a strong possibility that’s not a typical time to release a new console, what with the summer just approaching.
The wildcard here is GTA 6, since no one knows when that’s being released either. It’s unclear how significant a rival Nintendo consider it to be to the Switch 2, as while they’re not similar products one will still be taking time and money away from the other.
