Fans of the BBC quiz show Only Connect were left screaming at their television sets as one of the teams failed to identify an iconic song by the band Wham.

Monday night’s episode of the Victoria Coren Mitchell hosted series saw Hopsters (united by their passion for a pint) take on Sprouters in a heated battle.

And, as both teams took to the toughest wall on TV, things were looking promising for Hopsters, who scored a total of six points after finding two groups – including famous fictional planets and words preceding ‘factor.’

Next up, Sprouters (named for their shared love of, uh, the spectator sport of online vegetable growing), who were faced with a wall of words to be identified and sorted.

Like Hopsters, the three contestants managed to resolve two groups, but struggled with the remaining pairs, which included the likes of Tropicana, Sandwich, Soda and Class. Easy enough, right?

With the 80s anthem Club Tropicana staring them in the face, viewers at home were left screaming at their television sets in frustration.

Club Tropicana, of course, is the most famous song by the George Michael-fronted band, released in 1983, and one of the most iconic 80s songs of all time.

Sprouters managed to get Popes and Juice drinks, but were left stumped over Clubs and musical Keiths (Urban, Moon, Flint, Sweat).

The key to the wall? Urban, the name of both a pope and a singer (but not the same person).

Taking to the social media site X (branded ‘the stupidest name change of all time’ by Victoria, elsewhere in the episode) viewers shared their frustration at Sprouters’ blindness.

‘Arrgghh, how did they not see Club Tropicana,’ wrote a frustrated Debs_view.

‘I can’t be friends with anyone who doesn’t automatically assume Tropicana is preceded by Club,’ said kellyloumugg.

‘It’s a certain age of people who are currently screaming club at the TV,’ said CharlotteEarle_.

‘C’mon – Keith & Club!!!’ shouted BaycroftAl.

‘There will be some people shouting at the screen very happy,’ joked Victoria as the round ended. ‘That’s you isn’t it? You liked it.’

As they headed into the final round, Sprouters were kicking themselves, only having twigged on to the connections after the buzzer had rang and they’d run out of lives.

Still, it didn’t matter in the end, as they trounced Hopsters anyway, scoring a whopping 24 points – 10 more than the opposing team, and going straight through to the next stage.

It’s not over for Hopsters yet though – the team will be given a second chance at glory in a future episode.

Viewers didn’t hold Sprouters’ oversight against them for too long, with many taking to the social media site to congratulate them on their win.

‘Well done to The Sprouters – a mighty fine quiz team,’ wrote AntonDeck.

‘From the quality of the rounds, The Sprouters are a team to watch this series,’ agreed AllThingsQuiz.

‘Well, you’d never guess that they’re not Wham fans,’ joked gwowen.

Only Connect airs on Monday at 8pm on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer.
