The first in-game footage of upcoming VR title Batman: Arkham Shadow has just gone live, as well as its release month, and it shows what being Batman is like in first person.
It seems weird for a VR game, especially one exclusive to Meta Quest 3, to be the one to continue the Batman: Arkham storyline, but after the disappointment of Suicide Squad it’s good to know the original trilogy hasn’t been abandoned.
While Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League is technically a follow-up to 2015’s Arkham Knight, there’s almost nothing in the story to make that clear. Fortunately, Batman: Arkham Shadow is a much more direct continuation.
The new gameplay trailer for Batman: Arkham Shadow was premiered at Gamescom Opening Night Live, and shows what it’s like to be Batman in first person and reveals the release month to be this October.
Developed by Camouflaj and Oculus Studios, the two minute long trailer shows similar environments, combat, and stealth takedowns to Rocksteady’s Arkham games – even though they’ve had nothing to do with the game.
What characters are in Batman: Arkham Shadow?
The gameplay trailer also confirms the appearances of Harley Quinn, Harvey Dent (aka Two-Face), Dr Crane (Scarecrow), Jim Gordon, Alfred, and the Rat King (seemingly the main villain, but we’re not sure if he’s a new character or just a more obscure pick from the comics).
‘Reunite with iconic characters such as Harleen Quinzel, Jim Gordon, Harvey Dent, Dr Crane, and more. See who (if any) become villains,’ says the trailer description.
The trailer shows Harley Quinn in a ominous light, as she says: ‘We repress our rage, our fears, it feeds the shadow deep inside us,’ so it’s unclear if she’ll come to Batman’s aid.
Batman: Arkham Shadow will see a younger Bruce Wayne try to save Gotham City from the Rat King and his cultish following, the Rat Clan (which sounds like something straight out of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles).
The game takes place between the events of 2013’s Batman: Arkham Origins and 2009’s Batman: Arkham Asylum; in other words its a prequel.
There is no sight of the Batmobile, or Batwing, but Batman is seen gliding and using his grappling hook in the trailer.
Also similar to the Arkham games is the ability to use detective mode, while planning how to tackle stages and see through walls.
