After patiently waiting for more than two years, fans will be delighted to hear that one of the BBC’s best thrillers is returning for a second series.

Created and written by James Graham, Sherwood followed a series of dramatic murders in the Nottinghamshire mining village, where locals were still reeling from the impact of the 1980s miners’ strikes.

It focused on the trauma that left the community broken decades after the strikes and ongoing tensions with the police.

The six-episode series landed in June 2022, starring David Morrissey and Lesley Manville.

And now, after the first season ‘manifested’ the biggest strikes the country has seen and further disputes with the Metropolitan Police, Sherwood is back for a second series, and fans could not be more excited.

‘Absolutely brilliant series, quality drama,’ @DaddyPobbin praised.

TV critic Scott Bryan urged: ‘You *should* watch the first series of Sherwood this weekend if you haven’t already on BBC iPlayer,’ to which @skillman_ethan replied: ‘I binged the whole show yesterday after seeing one of your tweets. Best decision I’ve made in a long time! Can’t wait for series 2 now.’

@UpperGwladysBlu added: ‘Excellent show.’

The first season also managed to achieve a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 71% average audience score.

‘Stunning. Great actors. Clever plot. Well thought out. I wasn’t expecting how good it would be,’ Patrick K praised.

‘An incredibly rich and believable series. And, unlike so many other TV “mysteries”, there’s an actual mystery at the heart of this,’ Richard T added.

This is a first returning series for Graham, who won an Olivier award for his play Dear England and wrote Channel 4 film Brexit: The Uncivil War and ITV drama Quiz.

Ahead of the new series, he said: ‘Normally people watch something and say, “don’t return back,” and this time in Sherwood, they did.

‘So yeah, that was a new challenge, a new skill for me to have to return characters, return a series, keep the story going, and I loved it.’

He went on: ‘It just felt like the world of Sherwood, the world I grew up in, the Red Wall, it felt like there were many more stories to tell, new stories with existing characters, and the joy of bringing in entirely new characters that we’ve not met before.’

Speaking to Metro.co.uk, he added that after the first season he ‘wanted to do so much more’ with some of the characters, saying: ‘I always really thought there was way more to do.’

After the first season dealt with how a manhunt inflamed historic divisions sparked during the miners’ strike three decades before, the next instalment will explore other issues in the community.

The Walking Dead star Morrissey sees his character Ian St Clair leave behind his job as Detective Chief Superintendent to head up the council’s Violence Intervention Team, which connects community services, while joining the cast are Homeland actor David Harewood and Mr Bates Vs The Post Office star Monica Dolan.

Sherwood series two launches at 9pm on Sunday, August 25, on BBC iPlayer and BBC One, with new episodes premiering on Sunday and Monday nights across three weeks.
