Loose Women star Kéllé Bryan has detailed a recent health scare which saw her rushed to hospital for emergency surgery.

The 49-year-old is best known for being a member of the girl group Eternal, before going on to play Martine Deveraux in Hollyoaks and then joining the ITV panel show in 2019.

During an appearance on the show on Tuesday, the panel were speaking about women neglecting their own health due to being too busy or prioritising caring for others.

Host Ruth Langsford then turned to Kéllé and asked about her recent ‘health nightmare’.

She then explained being forced to wake her son up in the middle of the night for help recently after suffering severe pain.

‘I recognised it because I’d had a brief encounter with it two weeks before so I had a feeling, this is kidneys. I had that sense. It’s worse than labour, debilitating straight away,’ she said.

After starting to ‘panic’ she woke up her 12-year-old son Regan.

‘In the end I had to wake up one of my children, I felt really bad but I thought, I just can’t, this is an emergency. So, I crawled up the stairs on my hands and my knees and I woke him up.

‘I said, “Mummy just needs your help, I need you to be really grown up and I need your help”. Then he said, “Right, what do I need to do?”.’

After ringing his dad, Jay Gudgeon, Regan called emergency services and helped care for his mum as she started ‘throwing up’.

‘He was adorable and my absolute hero,’ she shared.

After being rushed to hospital, it was discovered Kéllé had a kidney stone lodged in her urethra and she underwent emergency surgery.

Despite living a moderately healthy lifestyle, Kéllé said her overeating played a factor in the scare.

‘I overeat, which is weird. Too many tomatoes, too much spinach, so it’s really about eating well but everything in moderation,’ she said.

Although she explained she had faced similar pains a few weeks prior and got it checked, she was advised to have a scan, but it ‘never happened’.

Kéllé has been married to Jay since 2010, with the pair also sharing daughter Kayori Rose.

In 2021 she struggled to hold back tears during an episode of Loose Women when opening up about her battle with lupus after being diagnosed with the auto-immune disease in 1998.

Kéllé previously said she was unable to touch her own children in case she picked up an infection, which could have killed her.

‘I don’t tend to watch it, because it’s really painful to watch,’ she said, looking back at footage of her in hospital. ‘It has been a really difficult journey. And it’s not just me that’s going through it.’

‘I got ulcers inside my mouth and started to lose my hair,’ she said about her early symptoms.

‘Eventually, after a very long period of time, I was diagnosed just in time and then treatment started.’

She also spoke about ‘losing three days of my life I don’t remember at all’ in 2014 and having to learn to ‘speak and walk again’ after once suffering a seizure.

Loose Women airs weekdays from 12.30pm on ITV1.
