Rob Rinder has revealed that his accent isn’t actually real as he opened up about why he decided to speak in a different accent to his family.
The British criminal barrister and television personality, 46, is known for being well-spoken and having rather posh close friends including the Sherlock actor Benedict Cumberbatch.
The TV star has revealed that although he was born in Westminster and raised in Southgate, he doesn’t have an accent that’s typical for North London for a very good reason – his accent is fake.
‘This is not real, my voice is an artifice it’s a complete fiction,’ Rob told Jamie Laing on the Good Company podcast.
‘I grew up, you know, around the corner from Amy Winehouse and my dad was a taxi driver.
‘Alright boy, Alright foxy,’ he said in a cockney accent. ‘That’s how I grew up and then at the age of three- no offence to them, although it sounds like a deliberate one – I sort of rather felt that I’d spiritually, intellectually and culturally outgrown them and had enough.
‘So I invented this,’ he said, gesturing to himself.

‘Being authentic about my early, very early childhood I sort of remember being surrounded by people who I thought “I clearly had nothing in common with any of you. I’m not even sure I’m related.”‘
Rob and Jamie then laughed as he explained that he felt very different from his family from a very young age and joked that he felt more at home in manor houses than in his own home.
‘They didn’t have Jeremy Kyle then which is such a pity because I could have had one of those DNA tests and looked really disappointed at four going “You are related to your family.” “F**k.”‘
‘I used to get taken to all of these nice posh houses like Hatfield House and then they’d take me home and I’d be like “this is f**king absurd. I live here.”‘
He concluded: ‘It’s totally genuine, it’s not like I didn’t aspire to, I didn’t want to be there. And so I invented this voice.’
While on the podcast, Rob also spoke about his love for Rylan Clark as he labelled the presenter a ‘true friend’.
‘And then the friends like Rylan who are there when things go really well, who can you telephone that’s going to sit alongside you and celebrate with unfettered joy. That’s who your mates are, right?’ he told Jamie.
The duo launched a series called Rob and Rylan’s Grand Tour earlier this year which saw them travel through Italy.
It’s been rumoured that the successful series could be set for a second season, but has yet to be officially confirmed by the BBC.
