Gavin and Stacey star Rob Brydon has admitted he was ‘moved to tears’ reading the script for the show’s final ever episode.

The BBC comedy, which was first released in 2007, followed Mathew Horne’s Gavin Shipman and Joanna Page’s Stacey West relationship as their families – from Essex and Barry Island respectively– also got to know each other.

The show, which also starred creators Ruth Jones and James Corden as Nessa and Smithy, initially wrapped up in 2010, before coming back in 2019 for a Christmas special.

Earlier this year it was announced it would be returning one last time, with another Christmas special to air in December.

While many details have been kept closely under wraps, Rob has teased what fans can expect.

The 59-year-old plays Uncle Bryn, Stacey’s protective, naïve and eccentric uncle, and Gwen’s brother-in-law, on the series.

Speaking in an interview with Chris Evans on his Breakfast Show live from Laverstoke Park Farm on Friday, Rob explained how he was incredibly moved by the script.

‘It was a couple of months before the cast saw the script. I only saw it, we were on holiday, we were away, about a month ago,’ he said.

‘I read it. Oh, it’s so good.

‘Do you know what? I was moved to tears, because it’s emotional,’ he added.

Ahead of the official announcement the show was coming back, rumours were swirling, however many of the cast shut them down.

However, Rob said many of them had been told to keep the news a secret.

‘We knew it was going to happen, but we were told we had to keep it a secret. So, you have to lie to people!’ he admitted.

‘It’s a horrible feeling, because you don’t want to lie to somebody right in the face.’

But, Rob did reveal that the episode was set to start filming in two weeks’ time and that he was looking forward for the cast to reunite.

‘I really am, because I know this will be the last time we’ll all be together,’ he said.

‘We all get on so well. And I think it has been 17 years since we started, which is crazy.’

Like many of the cast, Rob did his best to avoid addressing rumours of the show’s return, speaking about the ongoing questions in February.

‘I get asked about this on every interview I ever do,’ he told the Today programme.

Although said that ‘as far as I’m aware it’s another rumour’, he did add he would ‘love it if it were true’.

Gavin & Stacey returns on Christmas Day to the BBC.
