Sony’s upgraded PS5 may be announced very soon, as developers at Gamescom claim they have access to the console’s final specifications.
Despite an overwhelming amount of leaks concerning the console, Sony still hasn’t confirmed the existence of the PS5 Pro.
The best proof of the upgraded console’s existence emerged in April, when Sony took action against a video which outed the PS5 Pro’s specifications. In the video, the console is described as having 45% faster rendering performance compared to the original console, a GPU with 33.5 teraflops, along with new in-house upscaling technology called PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR).
We’ve had various other leaked details since, including ray-tracing upgrades, while new rumblings at Gamescom last week suggest Sony might be preparing to unveil the console very soon.
According to several reports, developers at the gaming convention in Germany were openly discussing the PS5 Pro and claimed to have received the console’s final specifications (hardware specs can change quite a bit during a console’s design process).
These reports began with a livestream from Italian gaming website Multiplayer, where a reporter claimed that a developer had delayed their game due to the PS5 Pro’s upcoming launch.
No specifics were mentioned regarding the console’s date, but it’s claimed the developer ‘wanted to release their game by the end of the year but decided to slow down development because the PS5 [Pro] is coming’– suggesting it could launch either later this year or early 2025.
A report on Wccftech has echoed something similar, claiming a different unnamed developer at the event had received PS5 Pro specifications and ‘were confident that Unreal Engine 5 would run much better on the new hardware’ compared to the original console.
The developer is said to be from a small studio which, as the report points out, ‘makes it clear the hardware’s specifications and details are already in the hands of a large number of game makers’.
At Gamescom, a developer implied to GameCentral that a State of Play was to take place in September, which is why they had embargoed their preview until then, although they made no allusions to the PS5 Pro.
This all suggests some sort of announcement is imminent. Sony’s previous mid-generation revision, the PS4 Pro, was announced on September 7, 2016 and launched on November 10, so it’s possible the PS5 Pro could follow a similar release strategy.
If it is announced in September, Sony might showcase the console at the Tokyo Game Show, which is set to take place from September 26-29. Sony is set to have a major presence at the event for the first time in years, and a new console would certainly be a reason to go all-out.
A launch in November would make sense too considering how thin the first party PlayStation 5 line-up is for the rest of the year, with the only major exclusive being Astro Bot next month.
