The creative director behind Astro Bot has ruled out a PSVR2 version, as he addresses the possibility of Astro Bot Rescue Mission on the headset.

Before the character became known through his PS5 debut in Astro’s Playroom, Astro Bot has had a peculiar trajectory as a PlayStation mascot.

The robot was first introduced in The Playroom on the PlayStation 4, which was an augmented reality mini-game compilation designed to show off the PlayStation camera. His first standalone adventure was 2018’s Astro Bot Rescue Mission, but that game’s audience was limited as a PSVR exclusive.

Astro Bot looks set to have his big moment with his upcoming PlayStation 5 title, which is the character’s first full-priced game outside of VR. For anyone hoping it might be given some sort of VR functionality though, the developers have some bad news.

When asked about the possibility of Astro Bot on PSVR2, the game’s creative director Nicolas Doucet replied: ‘No chance. It’s designed for a different medium.’

When pressed by MinnMax host Ben Hanson if there is a ‘zero per cent’ chance, Doucet replied: ‘It would be a different game.’

The developer was more coy when asked if he’s seen Astro Bot Rescue Mission running on PSVR2, which bizarrely isn’t backwards compatible with any original PSVR titles. ‘I can’t say that I did,’ he replied.

It sounds like there’s a strong chance of a PC version though, if there’s enough demand for it. When asked if he has a message for PC players keen to play Astro Bot, Doucet said: ‘Well, we want to hear from you. Absolutely we want to hear from you.’

Sony has released many PlayStation exclusives on PC over the years, including God of War, Ghost Of Tsushima, and Horizon Forbidden West. The next Sony title to hit the platform is God of War Ragnarök on September 19.

As such, there’s a strong chance Astro Bot will eventually arrive on PC, although it might be a few years away if it follows the same release pattern of prior PC ports, which usually drop around two years after they launch on PlayStation.

Astro Bot is set to launch on PlayStation 5 on September 6, alongside an Astro Bot-themed DualSense controller.
