Sony’s reveal of the PS5 Pro hasn’t gone down well with fans, as they call out the expensive price and lack of disc drive.

While we’ve known about the PS5 Pro for months thanks to various leaks, Sony finally revealed the upgraded PlayStation 5 console during a presentation on Tuesday.

Although the technical specifications – an upgraded GPU with 45% faster rendering and new in-house upscaling technology – weren’t surprising, the price point definitely was.

The PS5 Pro will launch November 7, 2024 at £699.99 in the UK, which is £220 more expensive than the base PlayStation 5 Slim with a disc drive, at £479.99.

The price point, along with the lack of disc drive, has led to a significant dislike-to-like ratio on the PS5 Pro console’s reveal trailer on YouTube.

At the time of writing, less than 24 hours after it debuted, the PS5 Pro trailer has over 157,000 dislikes, compared to 51,000 likes. For comparison, the original PS5 trailer has 1.6 million likes to 69,000 dislikes, while the PS4 Pro has 22,000 likes to 5,600 dislikes.

The ratio for the PS5 Pro is worse than the PlayStation Portal remote player trailer, which has 16,000 likes to 40,000 dislikes. As such, the PS5 Pro, based on YouTube metrics, is currently the worst received Sony console on the platform.

The reasons behind the negativity are clear in the comments. ‘700 dollars. No disc drive. No stand. Incredible,’ one user wrote.

Another joked: ‘As well as enhancing the graphics to improve small details that you never noticed before, we also enhanced the price…’

‘$700 with NO disc drive and something as simple as a vertical stand for a vertical system isn’t included? You are absolutely delusional,’ another wrote.

How much is the PS5 Pro?

The PS5 Pro costs £699.99 and doesn’t come with either a disc drive or a vertical stand, which cost an extra £99.99 and £24.99, respectively, through the PlayStation Direct store.

While the original PlayStation 5 console came with a vertical stand at launch, the revamped slim model, which is now the standard, made the stand a separate purchase. The PS5 Slim is also available in two separate versions, with a cheaper digital edition without a disc drive costing £389.99.

As reported by CNET, ‘about 40 or 50 games’ will receive PS5 Pro upgrade patches when the console launches, with more set to come beyond that. Sony has only confirmed 13 games, so far that will be enhanced at launch, which you can check out below.

It remains to be seen whether the high price will actually put people off from buying the console, but it’s important to note that the PS4 Pro was always a relatively niche product.

According to leaked data, the PS4 Pro only accounted for around 14% of PlayStation 4 console sales by 2020, four years after it launched, so it’s likely the PS5 Pro will have a similarly small impact.

We might see more from the PS5 Pro console later this month at the Tokyo Game Show on September 26-29, where Sony is set to have a key presence.
