Taylor Swift has endorsed US presidential candidate Kamala Harris in a move that could prove monumental in the election.

The singer, 34, took to Instagram in the midst of the first debate between Vice President Harris and former President Donald Trump to share her thoughts on the candidates.

Swift’s endorsement of Harris could prove pivotal.

She has previously demonstrated her power to mobilize voters. After encouraging her fans to register to vote last year, she led record-breaking numbers of people to the Vote.org website.

Swift wrote in an Instagram post yesterday: ‘I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election. I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them.’

She continued, detailing what she sees as positive leadership qualities in Harris: ‘I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos.

‘I was so heartened and impressed by her selection of running mate @timwalz, who has been standing up for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and a woman’s right to her own body for decades.’

The global icon also noted that Trump’s campaign had used her AI image to claim Swift had supported his candidacy.

She wrote: ‘It really conjured up my fears around AI, and the dangers of spreading misinformation. It brought me to the conclusion that I need to be very transparent about my actual plans for this election as a voter. The simplest way to combat misinformation is with the truth.’

She went on to encourage her fans to do research into the issues and make informed decisions, posting: ‘I also want to say, especially to first time voters: Remember that in order to vote, you have to be registered! I also find it’s much easier to vote early. I’ll link where to register and find early voting dates and info in my story.’

Swift signed off her message ‘Taylor Swift Childless Cat Lady,’ referencing Trump’s running mate J.D. Vance’s resurfaced 2021 comments, where he described childless women like Vice President Kamala Harris as ‘childless cat ladies.’

Swift is just the latest major star to back the Harris campaign, with singers like Charli XCX, Beyoncé, Megan Thee Stallion, P!nk, Bon Iver, Quavo and more all having previously stated their support for the Democratic candidate.

Swift posted in the aftermath of a dramatic first debate between the Presidential hopefuls at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with less than two months to go until the November election.

Vice President Harris successfully depicted herself as the candidate of hope, contrasting herself to a ‘disparaging’ former president who repeatedly went for low blows and personal attacks.

Trump repeatedly questioned why Harris has not fixed America’s problems while working in the White House, and warned of a ‘Third World War’ if she wins, among other instances of inflammatory rhetoric.
