The Perfect Couple was watched by 20,000,000 people last week – even though it was awarded a disappointing 59% on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

The murder mystery topped Netflix’s most-watched chart after just four days on the platform, and it’s safe to say everyone’s talking about it.

Starring Nicole Kidman and Liev Schreiber, the new mystery drama centres on Amelia (played by Eve Hewson), who is about to marry into one of the wealthiest families on Nantucket.

However, when a body washes up on their private beach, the wedding is derailed and everyone becomes a suspect.

But despite solidifying its status as a smash hit with Netflix subscribers, the TV show has proved less popular with critics. It narrowly missed out on receiving the required 60% to be considered ‘fresh’ on Rotten Tomatoes, with TV writers calling it ‘anticlimactic’ and ‘underwhelming’.

Writing for IndieWire, critic Ben Travers said: ‘The Perfect Couple is made to look like a good time — and maybe it can be, if you bring your own party — but there’s even less here than meets the eye.’

Meanwhile, Pat Stacey of the Irish Independent wrote: ‘The Perfect Couple is a mess — part-soap opera, part-whodunit, and wholly all over the place in terms of tone.’

But not everyone was put off. Several critics had good words to say about the six-part drama.

Jack King for GQ said: ‘The series whips by in a flash, brimming with intrigue, exposed familial taboos, and twists that you sort of mostly see coming but nevertheless satisfy when they arrive.’

Aramide Tinubu, writing for Variety, added: ‘As clues are unearthed, long-held secrets about the Winburys come to light in the most absurd ways, making way for a pulpy, overdramatized and entirely entertaining show.’

Netflix viewers were slightly more impressed with the show than the critics, awarding The Perfect Couple an Audience Score of 68%.

It’s clearly left people divided, with some users calling the show ‘fantastic’ and a ‘must-see’, while others labelled the drama as ‘horrible’ and ‘disappointing’.

Elsewhere on Netflix last week, true crime documentary Worst Ex Ever was bumped off the top spot, racking up 7.2 million views, while new fantasy series KAOS, starring Jeff Goldblum, moved up one place into third.

Down at the bottom of the list, The Umbrella Academy season four is clinging on at number 10 in its fifth week on the chart.

The Perfect Couple is available to stream on Netflix.
