The Switch 2 might be shown off soon… maybe (Nintendo)

A new rumour suggests Nintendo’s successor to the Switch will be announced early next month, with two different models.

While there’s been consistent rumours about Nintendo’s next console over the past year, the speculation has escalated considerably in recent days – with multiple sources claiming a reveal within the next six weeks, even though, on the face of it, that seems unlikely.

Nintendo often doesn’t operate under conventional logic but there’s many reasons why this seems implausible, namely that it might pull attention away from the Nintendo Switch line-up for the rest of 2024 and put people off from buying the console this Christmas.

However, the sheer amount of rumours has become increasingly hard to ignore, and now we have more fuel for the fire from a source on the GTA 6 Discord server.

When could Nintendo Switch 2 be announced?

In a post which has circulated on Reddit, a user named moistycharlie has stated that Nintendo’s next console, dubbed the Switch 2 by fans, will be ‘announced early next month’, aka early October.

How much could Nintendo Switch 2 be?

The source claims the console will have a ‘base’ retail price of $400, which converts to around £304. If this is true, however, the UK price will likely be higher due to tax reasons, as we’ve seen recently with the PS5 Pro. So probably around £400 here.

The same rumour also claims the Switch 2 will come in two ‘different’ models, although the specific details are unclear – so it could be two different colours like the original Switch, or possibly two different priced versions between an LCD and an OLED model.

It’s not the first time there’s been talk of two different models at launch, even though that’s not something Nintendo has ever done before. A rumour from this time last year suggested that only the more expensive of two models would feature backwards compatibility.

The new rumour has gained traction because moistycharlie correctly leaked the announcement date of the PS5 Pro, five days before any information was released. Prior to that, however, they don’t have any track record, so it’s unclear who they are or where they get their information from.

When you take into account inflation, the rumoured price is surprisingly (or perhaps one should say ‘sensibly’) low. The original Switch launched at $299/£279.99, while the OLED model costs $349.99/£309.99.

If the new Switch does have an LCD screen, as past rumours have suggested, the $400 base price point would make sense, and leave room for a more expensive OLED version in the future or as an alternative at launch.

While other rumours have pointed to a reveal this month, the most recent merely said within the next six weeks – which fits with this latest report. The original Switch was announced on October 20, 2016, before it launched in March the following year – so Nintendo might try to emulate that same strategy for its next console.

The difference is that Nintendo was in a very different situation in 2016. Back then, the company was coming off the financial failure of the Wii U, so the continued success of the Switch might make the company consider pushing back any successor announcement, in order to give the console one last Christmas push.

There’s a chance too that these Switch 2 rumours have been misconstrued with new Christmas bundles for the original Switch. Just recently, Nintendo Australia revealed a new bundle tied to Super Mario Bros. Wonder, which is set to launch on October 24 in the region, while more for Europe are said to be on the way.

What are the known facts about Nintendo Switch 2?

The only concrete fact about Nintendo’s next console is that it will be revealed before April 2025, as confirmed by the company earlier this year. Other than that we know nothing for certain and even the name Switch 2 is just a fan invention.

However, while Nintendo hasn’t stated it explicitly, they have strongly hinted that the new console will be backwards compatible with the original Switch -which several unconfirmed rumours have also suggested.
