There’s an increasing chance that a new game could be announced to mark Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater’s 25th anniversary, as the skateboarding legend confirms Activision is working on ‘something’.

Despite the success of 2021’s Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 remake, there’s never been any word on the future of the series from Activision.

However, the prospects of some sort of announcement picked up earlier this month when new artwork emerged to commemorate the upcoming 25th anniversary of the original Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater. It may just be a coincidence but Tony Hawk also turned up on in Astro Bot this month (probably, nobody is actually identified by their proper names in that game).

While it was unclear if these references were alluding to a new game announcement, Hawk himself has now confirmed Activision is working on ‘something’ connected to the series.

In an interview with YouTube channel Mythical Kitchen, Hawk was asked what’s next for the Pro Skater series, where he said he’s been in talks with Activision.

‘I wish I could tell you more,’ Hawk said. ‘But I can tell you that I have been talking to Activision again which is insanely exciting. We’re working on something.’

Hawk doesn’t state exactly whether it’s a new game in the series or another remake, but said it ‘will be something the fans will truly appreciate’.

Developer Vicarious Visions, who were behind the 2021 remake, were planning a remake of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 before the studio merged with Blizzard in April 2022.

According to Hawk himself, Activision were looking at hiring another developer for the third and fourth games, but the company ‘didn’t like anything they heard’ in the pitches.

It’s possible that Activision has found a studio to helm another remake, but it’s been a while since we’ve had a brand new instalment. The last was Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 in 2015, which was widely panned as the worst in the series.

When could a new Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater be announced?

While it’s still unclear if a new game will be announced as part of the 25th anniversary for Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, insider Jeff Grubb has doubled down on his claims that a State Of Play presentation will happen later this month.

Speaking on Game Mess Mornings on September 12, Grubb said a State Of Play will ‘probably’ take place in around ’12-ish days’, which puts it around Tuesday, September 24. This would place it just before the Tokyo Game Show on September 26, where Sony is set to have a key presence.

The 25th anniversary of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater doesn’t take place until later that week on September 29, but it’s possible that some sort of announcement could be made considering the series’ historical connection to PlayStation.

There’s a slight wrinkle in that Activision is now owned by Microsoft, but it seems unlikely that the series would be an Xbox exclusive moving forward, based on the company’s recent multi-platform strategy.

Sony is yet to announce whether any State Of Play will take place in September, but the company recently revealed the PS5 Pro console in a special presentation.
