Reese Witherspoon has given Legally Blonde fans everywhere a reason to celebrate after confirming the TV sequel is all systems go.

The beloved comedy film, released back in 2001, started a huge media franchise which has spawned several sequel and spin-off films and TV movies.

Reese, 48, last appeared as Elle in Legally Blonde 2: Red, White, and Blonde in 2003 – she’s also served as a producer on other properties in the Legally Blonde franchise.

Titled Elle, fans have been eagerly awaiting updates on the series which in 2018 was originally going to be developed as a third film in the series.

After that film was reportedly changed into a miniseries, the likes of The Office US’ Mindy Kaling and Brooklyn 99’s Dan Goor were attached to write, and now a date has been set for filming to begin.

‘We have a Legally Blonde TV show that starts filming in March, and it’s the young Elle Woods. We’re about to start the process where we’re trying to find [an actress to portray] the young Elle Woods,’ Reese told ET.

She then joked: ‘She’s got to kind of look like me.’

Reese continued: ‘I’m really excited to share this role with other people.’ It’s not known if she’ll make a cameo appearance as a present day Elle Woods in the series.

When asked for an update on the prospective third film, Reese remained tight-lipped and said there was ‘no update,’ further indicating that Legally Blonde 3 might never come to cinemas.

Legally Blonde follows Elle’s journey as a fashion-obsessed sorority sister who initially enrolls at Harvard Law School in order to win back her boyfriend.

However, she quickly develops an aptitude for law, helps to solve crucial cases in court, and, soon enough, forgets about her ex-boyfriend all together.

The film proved a big success at the box office, grossing back almost 10 times its initial budget, and has become a huge cult favourite ever since.

In 2007, the film was adapted into a major hit musical, which began on Broadway before doing four US tours, a West End run, and other two UK tours.

The second UK tour, which ran from 2017 to 2018, saw The X Factor’s Lucie Jones starring as Elle Woods after finishing eighth in the singing competition 2009 and representing the UK at Eurovision in 2017.

Legally Blonde’s TV update comes weeks after people discovered that the Academy Award-winning actress isn’t called Reese Witherspoon after all.

While Reese is part of her name, her real name in full is Laura Jeanne Reese Witherspoon, with the Friends guest star choosing to drop her first two names for her career.

The name Reese is actually her mother’s maiden name, which she used instead of Laura or Laura Jeanne when she began her acting career in the 90s.
