The Inbetweeners star Simon Bird has responded to rumours the hit sitcom is set to return to screens.

The coming-of-age series ran for three seasons from 2008 until 2010 and was then followed by two movies.

The franchise charted the adventures of students William McKenzie (Simon), Simon Cooper (Joe Thomas), Neil Sutherland (Blake Harrison) and Jay Cartwright (James Buckley).

Despite initially receiving a lukewarm reception, it’s now considered a cult classic comedy.

Last month Joe, 40, then suggested the main stars could be reunited again, adding he would be keen for a reboot.

A decade after the last film, the actor said conversations had occurred about the show returning, which he said the four stars felt ‘would be nice to do’.

However, two weeks on, Simon has shut down the idea and said there were no plans for another series or movie.

‘I’m afraid to be the one pouring cold water on this but it’s not happening,’ he said.

‘I can tell you emphatically that there are no prospects of a reunion,’ he added when speaking to MailOnline.

Although he did say the cast would be happy to get back into character, the decision was out of their hands.

‘We’d be happy to but it’s not up to us, it’s up to the writers, Iain and Damon, and I know they’re both very busy these days.

‘It’s not more likely to happen now than it was ten years ago I’m afraid.’

Simon went on to say that the comedy ‘inhabited a certain time’ and referenced previous comments when he said the show ‘wouldn’t be made now’, saying he still believed that.

‘So no there have been no discussion about a new show or film,’ he added.

The actor also said despite fans continuing to quote the show to him in public, he no longer remembered his lines and had ‘no idea what they’re talking about’.

Although Simon admitted he has never watched the show back, he is still in touch with the cast and that they try and meet up regularly.

Last month Simon told the Always Be Comedy podcast conversations about a reboot had ‘happened in various forms’.

However, he added that there were fears it may not live up to the standard of its popular original run.

The Inbetweeners is streaming on Channel 4.
