Married At First Sight UK grooms expose ‘epidemic’ among straight men-Josie Copson-Entertainment – Metro

Married At First Sight UK viewers have noticed a reoccurring pattern in the E4 series, and it’s not pretty.

Reality TV, when doing its job correctly, reflects aspects of society. Those tuning in can see situations they’ve experienced play out on the small screen.

And series nine of MAFS may be doing its job a little too well, as fans say they’ve spotted an ‘epidemic’ being exposed in the process.

The programme’s concept sees singletons put their trust into dating experts Paul C Brunson, Mel Schilling and Charlene Douglas to find their perfect match.

The pairings then meet for the first time at the wedding altar and vow to make their relationship work.

So far we’ve seen six couples make the ultimate commitment, and almost half of the heterosexual couples have experienced the same issue.

Upon meeting their new bride, the groom has declared that they are not their ‘usual type’ and then seemingly checked out before getting to know them properly. Meanwhile, the women have been happy with their chosen person and put effort into working on the connection.

First we saw Caspar Todd, 34, wed Emma Barnes, 31, and while Emma paid plenty of compliments to her new husband, it was rarely reciprocated. Instead he complained about Emma reminding him of his sister. ‘I fancy parts of her, but not all of her,’ he stated.

On the honeymoon, things worsened when Caspar told Emma she wasn’t who he’d usually go for. He did little to hide his disappointment when she stripped down to her bikini.

He told the camera crew: ‘The first time I’m seeing Emma in a bikini, I’m not feeling the sexual sparks that I was hoping to feel.’

After Caspar said his preference is petite women, Emma powerfully said: ‘I’m a size 14, not a monster.’

In another conversation, Emma told Caspar he needs to ‘work on his view of women.’

Adam didn’t compliment his bride Polly (Picture: E4 / Married at First Sight UK)

On the most recent episode Polly Sellman, 28, married Adam Aveling, 33.

‘The initial attraction’s not 100% there. She’s not my usual type. 10 out of 10 for me would be petite, brunette, dark features, tan. She’s not what I expected,’ Adam said after their first meeting.

Viewers have saw enough, and took to social media to comment on the situation.

‘That’s two grooms now that have complained about their bride for not being skinny enough by talking about their type being “petite” producers need to be doing better.. these men are awful,’ wrote Alinaaaxvs.

Hannah VDP added: ‘Finding it mildly triggering that you’ve got two men who’ve openly said their ‘preference’ is petite women – and the producers have matched them with mid-plus-sized gals and now they both feel they need to beg and convince them to be attracted to them.

‘Like no, you don’t need to spend your time and energy convincing BORING men to ‘look beyond your size 😍’ when there are loads of people out there who’ll find you gorj for who you are xxx’

Michael King wrote a strongly-worded post calling the grooms ugly, perhaps referring to their attitudes toward the women.

‘It’s absolutely wild how the UGLIEST men on this show are the ones with the boldest, and entirely incorrect, opinions on women.

Caspar made his feelings clear about Emma (Picture: Matt Monfredi / Channel 4)

‘I’m so sorry to all straight women who have to date heterosexual men like this,’ he shared.

Laura Jayne responded: ‘Honestly. This is why women want dogs and cats instead.’

‘It’s no wonder women are going off men when this is the calibre they have to deal with!’ Christina remarked.

UnmaskingJen summarised: ‘There’s a real epidemic of average looking men demanding “10/10’s” like they’re gods gift.’

Meanwhile Kelsey is ‘tired of midsize men and bigger men thinking a beautiful woman their size isn’t good enough for them’.

If you’re feeling like you’ve seen this film before, and you didn’t like the ending, there’s a reason. This isn’t the first time that a similar narrative has played out on MAFS.

In the most recent series, JJ Slater (yes, Katie Price’s boyfriend) specifically requested somebody who wasn’t his type, and they matched him with Bianca Petronzi.

JJ and Bianca’s story began in a similar way to this season’s couples (Picture: E4 / Married at First Sight UK)

Upon meeting, JJ repeatedly said he wasn’t attracted to Bianca, much like Caspar and Adam.

If they follow a similar pathway it’s not looking great for the latest batch of newlyweds, as JJ ended up wife-swapping to Ella Morgan.

We must thank the casting team for giving us some hope in the form of Kristina Goodsell and Kieran Chapman. They are currently looking like the only successful marriage.

Married At First Sight UK continues Monday at 9pm on E4.
