We love it when celebrities give their children fun and unusual names, but some of these A-listers have been blessed with some funky names themselves.

In a red carpet interview last week, Kate Hudson revealed that she had been blessed with a rather quirky middle name thanks to her mother Goldie Hawn.

Fans were shocked to hear that she’d been given an incredibly unpopular name that has been branded as ‘almost extinct’.

But Kate’s not the only star in Hollywood to have an unusual middle name!

Here’s a breakdown of some of the weird and wonderful names your favourite celebs are sporting…

Kate Hudson

While on the red carpet at the Toronto Film Festival in Canada, the Almost Famous star revealed her full name is Kate Garry Hudson.

‘I was named after my uncle Garry, my mum, [he was] her favourite uncle,’ she admitted with a smile while chatting to a reporter for ETalk.

She revealed that her uncle died just before she was born so her mother decided to pay homage to him when naming her only daughter.

James Corden

The Gavin and Stacey’s star’s full name is James Kimberley Corden.

Despite being a gender-neutral time, the name Kimberly has become more commonly used by women over the years making it rather unique.

On The Late Late Show in 2019, Jimmy Kimmel asked James about his middle name. James’ parents were in the audience and told the sweet story behind the name.

James’ father explained that generations ago when his ancestors named his grandfather, they heard that the ‘Boers had been defeated’ in the battle of Kimberley so decided to make a new tradition by adding the name to the birth certificate.

Richard Gere

The 90s heartthrob’s full name is Richard Tiffany Gere.

While this ultra-feminine name has been used to name little girls for hundreds of years, it is also a surname.

Richard was given the middle name to pay homage to his mother Doris Ann whose maiden name was Tiffany.

Elton John

Although Elton John was born Reginald Kenneth Dwight, when it came to selecting a new name he went all out and picked a rather bizarre middle name.

The Rocketman singer’s full name is Elton Hercules John.

The singer legally changed his name in January 1972 when he was around 24 years old.

Bizarrely the name Hercules was after a horse from a British sitcom that Elton loved, Steptoe and Son.

Billie Eilish

Billie Eilish actually uses her middle name ‘Eilish’ as her stage name but her full name is Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O’Connell.

Her middle name Eilish is named after Irish conjoined twins Katie and Eilish Holton who received a lot of press attention when they were surgically separated in 1992.

Rolling Stone reported: ‘Before she was born, her parents, Maggie Baird and Patrick O’Connell, saw a documentary about conjoined Irish twins, Katie and Eilish Holton, and decided if they ever had a daughter, they wanted to name her Eilish.

‘But when Maggie was pregnant, her father, Bill, passed away, so they named her Billie after him instead. Meanwhile, Finneas, who was four, insisted on calling her “Pirate,” and that stuck, too.’

In her audiobook, Billie Eilish: In Her Own Words, the singer revealed her brother was obsessed with Pirates and wanted her first name to be Pirate – and her parents were on board.

‘They called me Pirate for months, and they were kind of planning on naming me Pirate,’ she said. ‘And soon before I was born, my grandfather died, and his name was William, AKA Bill, Billie. And that’s where my name came from.’

Adele

Adele boasts two unique middle names (Picture: Gareth Cattermole/Getty Images for Adele)

Although she is just known by her first name, the Somone Like You’s full name is Adele Laurie Blue Adkins.

Laurie is typically a man’s name and blue is a colour, so this is a rather unique selection of names for Adele.

British Vogue reported that the star’s first name was nearly Blue – which would have been a strange showbiz coincidence as fellow singer Beyonce’s daughter is named Blue.

Martin Short

The Only Muders in the Building star’s real name is Martin Hayter Short.

Hayter- which sounds like a rather negative name – is actually Martin’s mother’s surname.

The star’s mum was named  Olive Grace Hayter but married Charles Patrick Short to become Olive Grace Short.

Hilary Duff

The Lizzie McGuire star was blessed with a bizarre middle name and her full name is Hilary Erhard Duff.

Hilary was given her father’s middle name as he is called Robert Erhard Duff.

In comparison, her older sister was given a very typical middle name and her full name is Haylie Katherine Duff.

Hilary is a fan of unique names and has given her four children very individual names.

Luca Cruz Comrie, is her eldest son’s name, Banks Violet Bair is her second oldest, Mae James Bair is her third child’s name, and her youngest is named Townes Meadow Bair.

Billie Piper

The Doctor Who star was born Leian Paul Piper.

However, her parents decided they weren’t as keen on Leian and changed her name to Billie a few months after her birth, but kept her middle name the same.

The star was given a masculine middle name as an homage to her father Paul Piper.

Will Smith

The Fresh Prince of Bel Air’s full name is Willard Carroll Smith II.

Will’s name is exactly the same as his father’s who is named Willard Carroll Smith Sr.

While his middle name is more commonly used by women these days, the original spelling was a popular unisex name and is still a common Irish surname.

Fans were more shocked to discover that Will’s name wasn’t short for William with many agreeing they were befuddled to learn it was short for Willard in 2023.
