Sony’s insistence on forcing PC players to have a PSN account has caused problems once again, as it sparks a backlash against God Of War Ragnarök.

While many PlayStation games have made their way over to PC, it’s only within the past year that Sony has enforced a policy which requires PC players to have a PlayStation Network account to play them.

It might be an inconvenience for the majority, but as seen with the Helldivers 2 debacle, it also blocks players in certain countries where PSN is not available. In that instance Sony backtracked on the policy, as they acknowledged it hadn’t been required at launch, but it has been applied to subsequent PC ports, starting with Ghost Of Tsushima Director’s Cut.

While there’s some logic in requiring a PSN account for multiplayer games, Sony has required the same policy for single-player titles too, including God Of War Ragnarök.

The game launched last week on PC and has since been hit with a wave of negative reviews, citing the PSN requirement. At the time of writing, the game has a ‘Mixed’ review average, with 69% of over 4,000 reviews being positive.

Based on the reviews though, it seems like there’s an inconsistency in whether you actually need a PSN account – with some players stating they’ve managed to play the game without logging in at all.

‘Incredibly frustrating to see the enforcement of a PSN account for a SINGLE PLAYER game,’ one review reads. ‘No matter how good the game is, you shouldn’t be forced to do that.’

Another wrote: ‘I get why people are upset about the PlayStation account stuff. It sucks when developers stuff online features into a single-player game. But I don’t even understand because I could play fine without logging in.’

According to one reviewer, a PSN account is required when you first boot up the game, but it is possible to bypass the login prompt on subsequent play sessions by backing up a particular file – essentially allowing you to play the game offline.

Despite the workaround though, the irritation has been too much for some people – with one user even leaving a poem to encapsulate the experience, which you can read below.

Others have left negative reviews complaining about performance issues, citing ‘crashes’, ‘audio bugs’, and ‘extreme stuttering’.

God of War Ragnarök on PC boasts unlocked frame rates and graphics with higher fidelity than on PlayStation 5, along with ultra widescreen support.

The next PlayStation game to be released on PC will be the remastered version of Until Dawn, which also requires a PSN account. The narrative-driven horror game is set to be released across PC and PlayStation 5 on October 4.
