Get ready for grey (Sony)

Sony’s special edition bundles to mark 30 years of PlayStation will not come cheap, as prices leak ahead of pre-orders going live.

PlayStation is set to celebrate its 30th anniversary on December 3 this year, and Sony is marking the occasion by draining your finances through grey-based nostalgia.

A bunch of 30th anniversary PlayStation 5 consoles and controllers will be up for pre-order from September 26, including two console bundles, a PlayStation Portal, and special edition versions of the DualSense and DualSense Edge controllers.

At the time of its announcement, Sony shared no price information on any of the items, but now a reliable leaker has given an indication of the financial pain that awaits.

According to leaker billbil-kun (via Dealabs) , the 30th anniversary PlayStation 5 digital edition console bundle, which includes the limited edition Slim console with no disc drive, a matching DualSense controller, console covers for a disc drive, vertical stand, and other PlayStation-themed goodies like cable ties and a poster, will be priced at $499.99 in the US.

Based on this price, they estimate it will cost £449.99 in the UK, which is a £60 increase over the standard PS5 Slim digital edition console. For US buyers, it’s an increase of $50 over the original model.

The only other leaked price is for the 30th anniversary DualSense controller, which will apparently cost $79.99 (£69.99) – the same price as the limited edition Astro Bot controller.

While there’s no price on the other products, it’s possible to estimate based on the percentage increase. If the PlayStation Portal follows the same price bump as the PS5 Slim (around 11%), the 30th anniversary version could cost roughly £219.99, which is a £20 jump over the original model. The DualSense Edge controller, meanwhile, might similarly increase from £209.99 to £229.99.

The most difficult to calculate is the PS5 Pro bundle, as it also comes with a DualSense Edge, a DualSense Charging Station, along with all the accessories in the PS5 Slim bundle. Considering the original PS5 Pro costs £699.99, it’s difficult to imagine the anniversary edition will cost anything below £999.99 with all the extras.

When do the 30th anniversary PS5 bundles go on sale?

All the 30th anniversary PS5 consoles and controllers will be available to pre-order from the PlayStation Direct store from Thursday, September 26. All the items will be released on November 21.

Pre-orders will also be available at other participating retailers (presumably including Amazon and likely GAME) from the same date. The only exception is the PS5 Slim bundle, which will go live at other retailers outside of the PlayStation Direct store from October 10.

If you want to secure a console or controller, however, you probably won’t have much luck simply picking one up when they launch. Sony has said there are only 12,300 units of the PS5 Pro bundle, with numbers etched onto the console, so supply is very limited.

What are all the 30th Anniversary PS5 consoles and controllers?

PS5 Slim digital edition 30th anniversary bundle – includes the limited edition PS5 Digital Edition console, DualSense wireless controller, console cover for a disc drive (sold separately), vertical stand, and collector’s items in four PlayStation shape cable ties, a PlayStation sticker, a limited edition poster, PlayStation paperclip, and original PlayStation controller-style cable connector.
PS5 Pro 30th anniversary bundle – includes the limited edition PS5 Pro console, DualSense wireless controller, DualSense Edge controller, DualSense charging station, console cover for a disc drive, and vertical stand. Also includes all the collector’s items listed in the PS5 Slim bundle.
