Courteney Cox has shared a huge update on Scream 7 and it’s not looking good for Gale Weathers…

The Friends icon, 60, has starred as the cutthroat journalist in all six instalments of the slasher franchise so far, having made her debut in the original 1996 movie.

It was unclear whether a seventh film would see the light of day after Spyglass film bosses reportedly fired Melissa Barrera from her role as Sam Carpenter, following comments she made on social media regarding Israel’s conflict with Hamas.

Wednesday star Jenna Ortega then departed, before Neve Campbell announced her shock return to the fold in March – after she took a backseat from 2023’s Scream VI over a salary dispute.

Although the final girl is officially back on board, Courteney revealed that she hasn’t ‘officially signed on’ for the upcoming slasher just yet.

‘I’m not officially signed on,’ she told Variety when discussing possible updates. ‘I’m not, but there will be a Scream 7.

‘They’re rewriting all the time. It’s not like I don’t know what’s going on.’

There have been huge changes to the line-up since the Spyglass film was officially announced, with Melissa, Jenna and director Christopher Landon all departing.

Fans threatened to boycott over the way Melissa’s exit was dealt with, and the outrage wasn’t squashed with the announcement of Neve’s return, or the news that Kevin Williamson – who wrote and produced many instalments – was coming on board as director.

While Courteney has no timeline for when she’ll decide whether to battle Ghostface once more, she shared her excitement of Kevin’s return.

‘You can’t get better than that choice,’ she vowed. ‘It’s going to be fun.’

If Kevin happens to be reading, the Cougartown icon also had a suggestion for the seventh movie, pleading for former co-star David Arquette to make a surprise comeback as Dewey Riley after he was brutally killed off in Scream 5.

‘I understand the reasons they did it, but whoa! Talk about a missed character,’ she added. ‘Dewey is so loved by Scream fans. They have to figure it out.’

Over to you, Kevin…

Despite Courteney not officially bowing out from all things Scream, fans were left devastated by her remarks, with some insisting that they had no desire to watch.

Imani3.0 tweeted: ‘What is the point of a scream movie if Gale Weathers isn’t in it…?’

PieceByPiece_KC agreed: ‘We don’t want it if Courtney isn’t involved.’

‘I mean I wasn’t gonna watch it anyways but now I’m gonna do that even more [sic],’ K fumed.

Over on Reddit, Seirolac penned: ‘The list just gets longer for reasons for me not to see this.’

Jacob520Lep said: ‘She’s the only one who’s been in all of them.. this is a shame if she isn’t involved at all.’

As ForryOMalley added: ‘If she’s not in the movie, it will be a huge loss.’

While the cast is still unclear and the plot is being kept under wraps, Neve previously teased that her character – who survived the first five movies – will be the main focus for the new movie as she faces down Ghostface for a sixth time.

‘We are going to follow Sidney,’ she told Entertainment Tonight. ‘They did pitch the concept to me, and it’s the reason that I jumped on board.

‘I love these movies, they are so much fun to be a part of, I’m so grateful for them, I could never have imagined being a part of a movie that would have lasted this many decades.’
