A remake of the GTA 6 trailer is going viral on social media, but fans can’t decide whether they’re impressed or revolted by its use of AI.

While waiting for GTA 6 to launch in autumn 2025, fans have spent their time creating some great remakes of the first trailer, including a real-life re-enactment with some of the actual locations.

The Hyundai rally team also made one, and if you ever wanted to know what GTA 6 would look like with the characters from GTA 5, well there’s a remake for that too.

The latest recreation, however, is not going down well with fans, with one side slamming it for its use of AI and the other debating when the technology is going to completely take over video game development.

A post is going viral on Reddit which includes a video comparing the actual GTA 6 trailer to a fan edit, showing side-by-side clips of the opening scene with Lucia in prison, when she and Jason walk down the aisle in the shop, the scene of the busy street on Ocean Drive.

It very much looks like it’s AI-generated, with oversaturated colours, making it look quite strange, but on a technical level it is impressive.

‘You can keep the AI slop. Rockstar’s artists will be giving us a once in a lifetime experience that AI will never be able to touch, no matter how advanced the algorithm,’ says Nintenzo 64.

You can watch the video below and judge for yourself whether it deserves praise or criticism for its use of AI.

The video has also sparked debate about AI’s future in gaming, and if it’ll manage to render footage in-game, in real-time, any time soon.

‘This is just the beginning, in one year or two we will be able to have these visuals generated in real-time, at 60fps or more. Meaning we will be able to play GTA 5 and 6 with real-life graphics,’ Chocolate Jesus boldly claims.

‘Someone ran game footage through an AI programme, that’s literally all this is, and it looks like s*** lol. The actual game being run on proper equipment will look infinitely better than this,’ Pistonenvy says, adding:

‘It’s going to be a long time before AI is able to produce anything that’s more valuable than what a person can produce.’

Google recently managed to recreate the classic shooter Doom using AI, although only at 20fps, which gives an indication of whether the technology is at the moment.

Since Rockstar isn’t the most talkative of developers it’s not clear what their position is on AI, but it’s likely there’ll be at least some AI-created assets in GTA 6. However, the trailer is definitely made with actual in-game footage and still looks a lot better than this recreation.

AI is a sensitive subject, as always (YouTube)
