I’m a size 18 & my work bestie’s a 10 – we found the best £18 supermarket dress for autumn, it looks good on any figure

TURNING up to work in near-identical outfits by accident, me and my work bestie are regularly accused of “twinning”.

And incredibly, we manage to flatter our very different figures while we do it.

I’m a petite and big-boobed size 18 which can be very difficult to dress at times.

Lynn, meanwhile, is a slender size 10 but feels self-conscious of her self-professed mummy pouch.

So it’s safe to say neither of us like anything too figure-hugging.

And at 33 and 44 respectively, we’re always aiming to look stylish without drawing judgement from the Gen Z crowd – or dressing too much like them. It’s a tough balance to strike!

Yes, we’ll give crew socks a go but we can’t promise we won’t fold them over into ankle socks. And the T-shirt tuck is here to stay.

In a bid to offer up some size-inclusive fashion inspo for the over 30s, we’re testing out the same outfits in different sizes from a range of high street favourites to see what works – and whether stores really offer something ‘for everybody‘.

And dare we say it? We think we’ve already found the dress of autumn in Sainsbury’s!

We picked up the Abstract Animal Print Soft Touch Midaxi frock from the supermarket’s in-house fashion label Tu Clothing.

Priced at just £18, it is available in sizes eight to 24 and boasts the on-trend 90s leopard print.

Lynn snapped it up in a size 10 while I opted for an 18, and the dress is certainly true to size.

The “soft touch fabric” also needs a special shoutout as it feels like butter, skimming over any lumps and bumps. A dreamy combination.

We are both in full agreement that it wears like a dream no matter what size, shape or age you are.

Sainsbury’s bosses say: “You can’t go wrong with animal print!

“Achieve a stylish autumn look with our abstract animal print dress.”

We’ve already paired this versatile piece with an oatmeal-coloured jumper for a more casual vibe, and with boots and a leather jacket to give it an edgier finish.

And I think it’s safe to say we’ll be fighting over who gets to wear it into the office on any given day. But it also won’t look out of place going for lunch with the gals or on a wee date nighy.

If anything, we’re just stunned that this dress hasn’t completely sold out – with all sizes still available to buy online, and selected sizes in store.

The fit, the material, the colours and the style all seem like an absolute steal when you’re getting change from a £20 note.

But don’t just take our word for it, as the dress has racked up countless five-star reviews on the Tu Clothing website.

One delighted shopper said: “Bought a couple of weeks ago and wore for first time yesterday.

“Fits and sits well, very flattering. Soft material and does not crush.”

A second echoed: “I bought this dress from my birthday money lovely dress fits just right and very good price.”

A third added: “Very happy with this purchase. Lovely soft material and a classy look.

“Will go with so many things and can dress it up or down – very pleased. True to size.”

A fourth agreed with us and hailed the frock as an “autumn staple”.

Is supermarket fashion the new high street?

DEPUTY Fashion Editor Abby McHale weighs in:

The supermarkets have really upped their game when it comes to their fashion lines. These days, as you head in to do your weekly food shop you can also pick up a selection of purse-friendly, stylish pieces for all the family.
Tesco has just announced a 0.7 per cent increase in the quarter thanks to a ‘strong growth in clothing’ and M&S has earnt the title of the number one destination for womenswear on the high street.
Asda’s clothing line George has made £1.5 million for the supermarket in 2023, 80 per cent of Sainsbury’s clothes sold at full price rather than discounted and Nutmeg at Morrisons sales are also up 2 per cent in the past year.
So what is it about supermarket fashion that is becoming so successful?
Apart from the clothing actually being affordable, it’s good quality too – with many being part of schemes such as the Better Cotton Initiative.
A lot of the time they keep to classic pieces that they know will last the customer year after year.
Plus because they buy so much stock they can turn around pieces quickly and buy for cheaper because of the volumes.

She continued: “This gorgeous dress is going to see me right through until spring as it will go with practically everything, dressed up or down.

“I’d advise to size up with it being a jersey type material so quite fitting. The colours are very in keeping with current trends.”

A fifth gushed: “Love this dress. Such good vale for money. Very flattering fit & lovely soft drapery fabric.”

Meanwhile, a sixth exclaimed: “Wow I bought this today on impulse. It’s the most soft, flattering dress I’ve had in a long time!

“I’m a size 20-22 but bought a 20 and it fits perfectly the ideal dress for autumn and work a bargain at £18 if they had different colours I would have bought them all.”

All filming was done in the beautiful Liberty Suite at the AC Marriot Glasgow Hotel in the city’s George Street
