Coldplay are the champions after beating Queen to an impressive milestone.

The Yellow hitmakers, who will be back in the UK in 2025, have been named the most played group on UK radio and TV of the 21st century, beating the Bohemian Rhapsody legends to the top spot.

Chris Martin and the band have seen their music played 40,000 more times than the rock royalty, who found themselves in second place in music licensing company PPL’s list.

Viva La Vida is the group’s biggest track, being played an average of 27 times each day since its release in 2008.

It’s followed by Paradise, Clocks, Something Like This and Adventure of a Lifetime, with the band pulling in 400,000,000 seconds – or 13 years – of airplay this century.

All of Coldplay’s nine albums to date have hit the top spot in the UK album charts, a feat they’ll be hoping to repeat on October 4 when their 10th record Moon Music is released.

Queen took four albums to top the charts with 1985’s A Night At The Opera, but secured another six in their career, including Made In Heaven, which was finished and released after Freddie Mercury’s death.

The research has been tone as part of PPL’s annual National Album Day campaign, which is in its seventh edition with this year’s theme being Great British Groups as the organisation continues to celebrate the art of the album.

Take That, Little Mix and The Beatles round off the top five, but Oasis fall just outside in sixth place despite news of their reunion.

They’re followed by The Bee Gees, Stereophonics, the Eurythmics and the Rolling Stones for the rest of the top 10.

Just below in the top 20 list are Clean Bandit, Duran Duran, Sugababes, The Police, Simply Red and Snow Patrol.

Meanwhile, Electric Light Orchestra, Keane and Wham! all feature, with Texas just sneaking into the ranking.

PPL’s CEO Peter Leathem OBE said: ‘This country has produced some of the most iconic and successful bands of all time, so documenting them is a perfect way to mark this year’s National Album Day.

‘Including groups from across the last 60 years, this list is a reminder of the strength and depth of British music through the decades.

‘Coldplay are fitting owners of the number one spot – few artists can claim to have had such a presence on UK radio and TV since 2000.’
