As fans reminisce on the late Dame Maggie Smith’s immense onscreen legacy some have pointed out a heartwarming parallel in a poignant scene from Hook with Robin Williams.

The Harry Potter actor died on Friday, aged 89.

She enjoyed an acclaimed seven-decade-long career across cinema and TV with a breadth of roles including Lady Violet Crawley in Downton Abbey, Charlotte Bartlett in A Room with View and, of course, Granny Wendy Darling in 1991 movie, Hook.

The Steven Spielberg film starred Dustin Hoffman as the titular villain Captain Hook and the late comedian and actor Robin Williams as Peter Pan.

In the sequel he is a lawyer called Peter Banning who returns to Neverland to rescue his children.

Williams died by suicide in August 2014, aged 63, (ten years earlier) after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and now keen-eyed fans are returning to one moment between Wendy and Peter that rings truer than ever.

During the scene, Peter reunites with Wendy and apologises for taking so long to visit her. As Wendy descends the staircase she tells Peter: ‘It’s been ten years between visits,’ before scooping him up in a heartfelt ‘skwudge’.

And it hasn’t escaped people’s notice that the timeline matches with real life – if there is an afterlife for the two actors to reunite.

‘The way Maggie Smith says it’s been 10 years, and it has been 10 years since Robin Williams passed. I’M NOT CRYING, YOU’RE CRYING,’ @stillgoldenpony wrote on X.

‘They really met again after 10 years…’ @judithstefanoni added.

‘You’re with Peter/Robin Williams now. Thank you for the magic and rest in peace, Maggie,’ @peanutbuttercup said.

‘”It’s been 10 years…” -Maggie to Robin. I’m gonna go sob in a corner now,’ @dnebster echoed.

‘It’s been 10 years since Robin passed…so this would be accurate if this happened. I’m crying again,’ @jadenjewel said.

Coincidence aside, fans were clearly choked up with emotion as they relived the sweet moment between the enigmatic onscreen pairing.

‘Just gonna go hide in a corner and bawl my eyes out. I loved Maggie and Robin so much,’ @lostinausten79 shared.

The movie holds a special place in many people’s hearts and was a huge success at the time, earning $300million (£224million) at the global box office. What’s more, in the film 56-year-old Smith was aged up to play a 92-year-old grandmother.

In an interview with the Telegraph in 2014 she recalled a moment on set when Spielberg asked the costume department how old Smith was meant to be.

‘My friend said without hesitation, “92!” I’ve been that ever since. They don’t need to make me up any more, I’m afraid. I’ve caught up with myself,’ she said at the time.

During the same interview, the Prime of Miss Jean Brodie star reflected on the idea of a legacy after Williams’ death, saying it ‘doesn’t last’.

‘The world is replenished all the time. I don’t think people will remember,’ she added.

It’s not the only eerie coincidence surrounding her death. Some have noted that exactly a year ago, on September 27, 2023, Dumbledore actor Michael Gambon also died.

The Oscar-winning actor’s sons announced Smith’s death on Friday in a statement, saying she ‘passed away peacefully’.

The statement continued: ‘An intensely private person, she was with friends and family at the end. She leaves two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother.’

Tributes have flooded in for the British acting titan from King Charles, her Downton Abbey and Harry Potter co-stars and countless famous friends honouring her life on and offscreen.

In a sweet tribute, Daniel Radcliffe reminisced on his first meeting with Smith on as a nine-year-old on the set of David Copperfield where she came across as ‘incredibly kind’.

‘The word legend is overused but if it applies to anyone in our industry then it applies to her. Thank you Maggie,’ he concluded.
